When your dreams finally become your reality, it’s an incredible feeling. I wanted to share that I am officially a dental practice owner. Having my own dental practice has been my dream since I was in dental school. I’ve been working day and night for the past two months to open my practice and I am finally done. I am so fortunate to have supportive family and friends who has helped me during this process. I appreciate you all so much and thank you for helping me. Linda Vista means “beautiful view” in Spanish and it’s the neighborhood that I grew up in and has shaped me. I couldnt have chosen a better location to practice dentistry. Starting a dental practice is far from easy and there has been many challenges but this process has taught me so much about myself and my passion for dentistry. I am grateful for this amazing opportunity to be able to give back to my community and take care of my patients the way I want. also.. I am very thankful for @vanillanguyen for moving from Portland to help me run our practice. We are currently looking for a dental assistant to join our team, so if you know anyone with experience, please let them know that we are hiring. It’s important for us to take a step back to reflect on why we have chosen our respective paths. The reality is that some days are much, much harder than others. Finding the motivation to study, to get up every day and go to work, or in my case, to keep this shop going... I can’t lie. I’ve thought of quitting so many times because the pressure can and has taken a huge toll on my mental health and stamina. (Aka instrument distribution day) so excited to start, and so proud to go to a school where we start hand skills from day 1! And with that, orientation is officially over and tomorrow starts our first day of class can’t wait to see what this week has in store

I’ve always wondered when will I ever use the things I learn in lectures, especially the medical ones I learnt in my second year ‍⚕️ After getting into year 3, I think I’ve found out why: 1.Pharmacology - the names of the drugs and their function - eg. LMW heparins & warfarins are anticoagulants, aspirin is a NSAIDS, carbamazepine is an antiepileptics. 2.Pathology - pathophysiology of the diseases - so you’d know the clinical manifestations & what type of investigation you’d need to diagnose them, I can tell you very frankly, this takes a lot of understanding, memorizing works too, but it’s just gonna be super duper dry & boring without understanding it properly. 3.Microbiology - I think the pathophysiology part is covered here too, and a lot of investigations. So there’s that. . . I’m not gonna lie, I don’t remember everything I learnt & I learnt a lot of things the hard way, but I know now that it can be easier & I hope it can be easier for you too my year 2 juniors haha. Just don’t just throw all your year two knowledge away and you’ll pick up general medicine in year three a lot more easier. I know GM isn’t exactly those die-die-must-know things as a dental student/ a future dentist, but I think it’s really beneficial to know them and when you meet patients with certain medical conditions/ presenting symptoms, you won’t be completely clueless. I was asked by one of my patients, “You really love your job, don’t you?”. A mix of emotions and thoughts went through my head and I said, “Of course, can’t you tell?!” with a playful laugh. “Yes, I can really tell and that’s why I love coming to see you” she stated. In that moment I felt so proud. Not only was I proud of being able to share my love for my career and my patient seeing it, but the fact that after all I have been through, I am still able to care for my patients with that same passion that got me interested in dentistry in the first place. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I’m going to tell you right now, being a dental hygienist is NOT easy. We are constantly working in small spaces, getting bodily fluids all over, dealing with anxiety ridden patients, stressed with being on time and maintaining our schedule, dealing with office politics, working for doctors who nickel and dime you and treat you as replaceable, being picked on for our success and being called “divas” by other staff, going home with aches and pains from the meticulous work, all while getting little to no recognition or encouragement. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I say this to bring the reality to the surface. Patients have no idea what we go through. All they see is a smile and are told to floss more (lol but please do). So why on earth would anyone in their right mind do this for a living? Because of my patients and the opportunity they give me to trust their smile and health with me. They make it all worth it. To make that positive impact on their life is why I show up everyday with a smile on my face ( it also helps to work for an office you love ). ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Dental hygiene is one of the hardest yet most rewarding careers out there. So for those who are stuck in that place where they feel like giving up, I encourage you to keep going. Giving up will only take away the opportunity of things ever getting better. Remember why you started in the first place and let that lead you on in your career. You never know the lives you will touch and impact you will make.
