I was asked earlier this week in one of my group Strong Mom classes about what "ab exercises" a new mom can and should be doing. So here's one you can be doing! First of all, I know it's hard to think outside of crunches, planks and sit ups as being ab exercises, but here's the deal: Crunches and sit ups aren't the best use of your time. especially as a new mom, these type of exercises are placing unwanted pressure in your abdomen, doming your belly out (and potentially pushing your organs downward) when what you're really trying to do is flatten your belly. While crunches are working your abdominal muscles crunches aren't working your deep core muscles, and deep core activation is necessary when looking to flatten your belly after baby. . What we want to do is retrain from the inside out. I know it doesn't feel like typical core work but it's working. Here's how to do this exercise: Sit on a flat surface on your sitz bones. (untucked) hold onto a weight or light ball, or just place your hands out in front of you. Inhale to expand before you start, as you twist your upper body exhale to engage and pick up your "blueberry" as you exhale and contract your pelvic floor muscles. Inhale and release the blueberry fully. For those moms in my classes, we add this breathing to almost all of our exercises. It's this "core breathing" that will work that deep core that everyone is always talking about!! Crunches aren't it. .
