Found this on reddit. But really, I'm sorry that the fact I live in constant pain or that I have chronic illnesses makes able bodied people so uncomfortable and challenges their world view so drastically that I have to shrink myself and silence myself for them. Honestly, that sounds like a YOU problem #abledsareweird

“TAB” = acronym for a person who is Temporarily Able-Bodied. It can be hard to explain to an able-bodied person what it means to be disabled. Not because they aren’t trying to understand but because their life experience has never showed what it feels like, what it looks like, what it means. Before my conditions became chronic and began to cost me all of my privileged ability, I didn’t know all of the ways my privilege impacted my world view. There was a time in my life where I was able-bodied or as people in the disabled community might say, a TAB. The label TAB is there to remind us that we never know when a person may lose their able-bodied status. The term is not meant to sow fear, but to allow people who have never experienced profound disability to find empathy and remember that ability is a privilege that does not always last. While not everyone who is able-bodied will become disabled, unexpected illness, injury, and old age, find us exactly where we are regardless of power, age, class, or even health. For many people becoming disabled is a terrifying prospect. I’ve had people tell me that they’d rather die than deal with what I go through on a daily basis. Doctors and nurses often have trouble relating to disabilities too. If I had a dollar for every time a medical professional saw Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (chronic fatigue syndrome) on my chart and said that they should have that “excuse” because they’re so exhausted from working, I would be able to pay all of my medical bills. Complete strangers feel totally confident telling me that I shouldn’t need my wheelchair because I’m not paralyzed. I even had a neurologist attempt to explain that she understood what it is like for me to be bedridden for over a year because she had had a flu once for a month and she got so bored. The messy truth of disability is that when you find yourself disabled or chronically ill you don’t have a choice in the matter. You have to find a way to make life work with your new limitations. Being disabled isn’t a badge of honor given to only the strongest among us. It is the fire we are forced to cross in order to live.

Recently, @drphil , a psychologist who was stripped of his license years ago, said that 100 out of 100 Interdisabled relationships (1 caregiver/partner + one disabled partner) will FAIL. This is complete rubbish and damaging to disabled people. Full video link in bio

DISABLED BODIES ARE NOT BROKEN! • Seriously #gameofthrones there were so many other options: wise, all knowing, memory keeper, UN-broken...all of these were super easy non-ableist options that took two seconds to come up with. Disabled people are not props, we are not plot points, we are not just “a convenient story.” Our lives are not defined by our injuries, illness, neurodiversity, or genetic anomalies. Survivors of abuse are not “forged” by trauma. Being hurt doesn’t make you a better person. It just makes you a person who is hurt. We are already blamed and shamed for abuse we did not ask for and have no control over. No one has the right to claim responsibility for our perseverance or our ability to survive and thrive in a world that is trying to erase us. We did that all on our own. So here it is. We are returning your “broken” status. You can put it right next to your privilege where it belongs. • [Image description: Jessi sits in her wheelchair with a black face mask on and looks at the camera. On today's episode of Accidentally Making Nondisabled People Uncomfortable:⁣ ⁣ For my birthday and Mothers Day, which happen to be the same day this year, Bry sent me to the resort spa for a treatment of my choice while he got both kids ready for the day and all our stuff packed for the trip home. There are so many treats wrapped up in that. ⁣ ⁣ The technician who did my pedicure was lovely and sweet. In the course of conversation, she told me I had nice feet -- so soft and hardly any blemishes. I can't just take a compliment without some humorous deflection, so I replied, "Thanks! I hardly walk on them at all, and it turns out that's a great way to keep them pretty!"⁣ ⁣ Crickets. ⁣ ⁣ Oops. I, for one, thought it was a very funny joke. ‍♀️
