I was never a confident person. ⠀ As a young girl I was beyond shy, like- cry before going to school kinda shy. The thought of someone looking at me, never mind the teacher calling on me to give an answer or read in front of the class...it terrified me. ⠀ From grade 1-2 I was bullied. Badly. One of my bullies was a girl a grade older than me and the other was a boy two grades above me. I tried to find any and every excuse to either not go to school or to skip recess, because that’s when it would happen the most. ⠀ Then throw in my type 1 diabetes. All you want to do as a kid is fit in. I stood out like a sore thumb, or so I thought. ⠀ A D U L T H O O D ⠀ My shyness I grew out of. But my quietness and lack of confidence I did not. Large groups weren’t my thing, talking to new people was a big fear, and I just felt awkward and out of place. ⠀ So when my acne broke out in 2017 at the age of 29...it put me in a dark place for a bit. How do you possibly begin to even go out in public like that when you had issues with it looking “normal”?! ⠀ About a month in, something changed. I was sitting in my room, lost in my thoughts and it hit me: I’m not the only one. ⠀ I decided right there that I would start documenting/sharing this journey. After a few week of doing so I noticed that not only Was I getting a mass amount of messages from others who could relate in some way, but I was feeling so much healthier mentally + emotionally. ⠀ My self confidence continued to grow. And today? I’m a different person than I was pre acne. In the best ways possible!! Acne is a b!tch, it’s not an easy road. There are MANY ups and downs. ⠀ But I don’t think I’d change my journey. Here’s me with my scarred skin, my wonky smile, my un-plucked brows and all the other imperfections that I have, not exactly instagram perfect, but who really gives a shit ☺️ I haven’t worn any make up for weeks, I haven’t stressed about my skin for months, and I haven’t cared about what other think of me recently. And do you know what, it feels bloody fantastic! ✨⁣ ⁣ Without dealing with acne and going through all those rubbish times I really don’t think I would have developed the resilience, strength and confidence that I have now. The way I value and view myself is totally different after suffering with acne. The compassion I feel for others is so much deeper and the beauty I see in others has grown. ⁣ Acne isn’t fun and it can totally rule your life, but it will get better, and you will BE better through our hardships we learn the most.
