This hits close to home, hang onto your hats ••• If you're sick, scared, and struggling to survive without the things you need, this is for you. ••• It's not okay to pretend you have a medical need when you don't. This goes for tubes, surgeries, diagnoses, medications, mobility aids, etc. ••• BUT ••• I am DONE listening to this community say "If you need something your doctor will tell you" or "If you have to fight a doctor for something, you don't need it," and that somehow 'advocating for yourself' is only okay when your doctor agrees with you. THOSE ARE LIES. ••• We all know the medical system is messed up. But some people just seem to hit the bad doctor jackpot, and we literally get left for DEAD. I was left to starve for over a year by my doctors, and sadly, this community would've shot me down if I'd asked how to convince my doctor to give me a feeding tube. ••• My family and I fought tooth and nail against doctors who refused me the things I needed in order to be in less pain or simply STAY ALIVE. Feeding tube, port, TPN, PICC line, crutches, AFOs. Those weren't volunteered to me. I've seen 40 doctors in 2 years. And I've still had to fight for my life. ••• Starving, breaking, withering away- none of those should happen to a human body. If you need something don't just advocate, FIGHT for it. Some doctors are jerks, and just because they shoot you down doesn't mean your needs aren't VALID. Don't you dare give up fighting til you're safe. ••• I'm standing on the sidelines cheering you on FEROCIOUSLY.

In season two, episode one, of Showtime’s series, “Billions,” Lara Axelrod is at her children’s school when she spots a small crowd of kids gathered around a girl lying on the floor outside the nurse’s office. The girl struggles for breath, her face is covered in red blotchy spots, and her forehead dotted with perspiration. The nurse is on the phone calling emergency personnel, saying the girl came into her office complaining of nausea, then she vomited. The nurse tells Lara the girl is having a seizure. “She’s in anaphylaxis,” Lara says with certainty as she kneels next to the girl and searches her backpack for the girl’s EpiPen. Lara finds it while the camera focuses on her face and the squirming girl on the floor trying to breathe. She presses the Epipen into her thigh. “Listen, you’re having a reaction,” Lara tells the girl, “but I gotchyou.” In the midst of this commotion, there’s a moment when the viewer sees the nurse’s eyes widen in horror as she realizes she failed to recognize anaphylaxis. The scene is particularly compelling because it touches on a universal fear most of us have — that we wouldn’t know what to do if we were with someone else’s child having a life-threatening allergic reaction. The fear is understandable. When I first learned our first child was allergic to peanuts and tree-nuts and the concept of an EpiPen was new to me. I imagined scenarios of having to save his young life, raising my arm, EpiPen in hand, ready to jab his thigh to administer an injection of adrenaline as he clutched his throat with both hands. I was relieved to learn you don’t ever jab an EpiPen, but rather, hold it to the person’s thigh and press. -via Motherly on @huffpost #anaphylaxis #foodallergies #epinephrine #foodallergyawareness

A teenager who had four life-threatening allergic reactions in five months is warning others never to be complacent about food allergies. . “For fourteen years we thought Madison was fine and it wasn’t going to be an issue, but it can happen anywhere, anytime,” said her mom. . Madison, who now takes two EpiPens wherever she goes and wears a medi-alert bracelet, said she had also learned some valuable lessons. . “No matter how old you are you still have to take it seriously. If you go to restaurants you need to ask people, ‘What is in this food?’ If it makes you a little bit embarrassed it doesn’t really matter,” Madison said. . Did you know? Used epipens still contain epinephrine after use. It is well known by wilderness medical experts that in an emergency situation, in a remote environment, it is possible to extract as many as 4 additional doses of epinephrine from a single auto-injector after the unit has been used in standard fashion. . There are techniques promulgated by the Wilderness Medical Society that address emergency cases of anaphylaxis when a second epipen is not available and a hospital is too far away. . This information does not in any way lessen the importance of always having two epipens on hand. However, the more you know, the better prepared you can be in an emergency. . See our IGTV for a video by Dr. Julie Brown demonstrating the technique of retrieving additional epinephrine from a used epipen. Swipe left to see an excerpt. . In emergency cases of anaphylaxis encountered in a resource-deficient, or wilderness environment, it may be lifesaving to be able to retrieve additional doses of epinephrine from auto-injectors that are otherwise intended only for single dosage. The paper below describes a series of techniques, confirmed by practice and expert consensus of the authors, which are proposed as the safest and most effective way to accomplish this salvage retrieval. It is important to remember that these techniques are presented as emergency adaptations to a resource-deficient situation, and should not be used prospectively as an anticipated technique to manage biphasic anaphylaxis, or multiple anaphylactic patients. (Note: The reason for the extra epinephrine is to ensure reliability and durability of the medicine in the epipen.) . Death from anaphylaxis can occur in as little as 15 minutes without treatment. Most severe reactions occur within seconds or minutes upon exposure to an allergen. But sometimes, anaphylaxis can be delayed (as in Oakley's case). . Once the body starts to undergo a severe reaction, though, there is only one first line defense against anaphylaxis: epinephrine. Epinephrine first, epinephrine fast. And have extra auoinjectors on hand always in case a second dose is needed. . Leaner - Yes⁣ Happier - No ⁣ ⁣ I want to talk about something I’ve never spoken about before... ⁣ ⁣ And TBH is embarrassing considering how irrational my fear was at times. ⁣ ⁣ And that is.....Food Anxiety. Many people suffer with it, although usually it’s under different circumstances. Mine ruled me for about 2 years. ⁣ ⁣ When I was 18 years old I found out that I was anaphylactic, now this wasn’t the end of the world. I felt invincible, nothing was going to get me and certainty not a piddley little prawn..... although it can kill me in 15 mins. ⁣ ⁣ For the first few years I didn’t take it seriously, I would continue to eat what I wanted to, pushing the limits until I had numerous allergic reactions, one was on an airplane on route to Europe with no way of landing in a hurry. ⁣ ⁣ This was a turning point. The shift was polarising, I never left the house without my eppipen, I obsessed over who cooked my food, what was in it and if there was ANY possibility of seafood traces in my food. ⁣ ⁣ I became anxious flying, anxious eating out and to be honest a pretty boring eater. ⁣ These days things have TOTALLY changed, I eat all food, I don’t let fear hold me back in anyway shape or form, life is precious but its not worth stressing over the things you cannot control. ⁣ ⁣ Since then I’ve travelled to 15 countries, eaten all the local food (where possible), and not let this this thing rule me. ⁣ ⁣ Don’t waste your youth living in fear. Push the limits. Test yourself and get out of your comfort zone. ⁣ ⁣ If anyone has struggled with this feel free to message me. Hell, we can even compare Eppipen sizes.... ⁣ ⁣ ✌✌✌ #RealTalk

Anaphylaxis! From being stung by a bee to inhaling cooked shrimp or having your lip fillers dissolved - is your practitioner able to recognise the life-threatening signs of anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction). Hyalauronidase (the dissolving agent for lip filler that we use daily in clinic) is an allergen in bee venom, or often animal derived and therefore carries a 1 in 7000 risk of allergy. However beauticians use it illegally (it's prescription ) willy nilly (and often without a crucial patch test to keep you safe). Safety aspects aside, an audit of most insurance companies showed that non medics were in fact not insured to give this prescription medicine, despite what they claimed or believed. If this happens, is your beauty therapist able to handle the situation after a day's course? Can they administer the right amount of the correct drug? Can they intubate? Have they regularly updated basic life saving rubber stamps and certificated re this? Would you WANT your lash girl managing this to save your life, or a doctor? Histamines cause our blood vessels to dilate. A few things happen when our vessels widen: 1. They become leaky. There’s a fluid shift from the vessel into the tissues. Therefore, be prepared to see oedema and hives in the perpihery as well as the upper airway. Now if the upper airway swells, you’ll start to hear stridor! - if the airway swells, prepare for aggressive airway management to save that life. 2. Blood pressure drops. In addition, you might see a decline in mental status as well Adrenaline is the wonder drug that reverses these signs as it stimulates vasoconstriction. Do you feel confident a non medic would remain calm, treat you quickly and appropriately whilst the clock is ticking and precious seconds are lost? This is NOT scaremongering, this is public interest and awareness. It's called looking after your back, and giving you facts. Beautician injectors get all up in arms each time we do a post about this - it's not a personal attack, just stick to the safe stuff dudes and stay in your lane. You seriously hurt or kill one person, and you'll wish upon a star you had taken heed of this post. credit: @uicemt @itsamarython

"I believe that you are God alone, but sometimes I still try to take control. Cause I get scared when I can't see the end, and all You want from me is to let go." ••• Waking up in my own bed this morning was wonderful. Another seizure accompanied by anaphylaxis on Wednesday landed me an ambulance ride and an overnight admission. Thankfully, I'm home safe and sound now, and wanted to give you a little health update. ••• This one's a downer. I'm once again struggling to eat much. Insomnia, fatigue, dislocations, and pain have worsened. Dizziness is my enemy, I'm falling ALL THE TIME. Reactions are wearing me thin, I'm seizing at least once every other day. Anaphylaxis is now another monster in my life. But the good news is I can still walk, and I'll be starting new meds soon in hopes of slowing down reactions. ••• "You've answered my prayer before I even speak, all You need for me to be is still." -Still (Hillary Scott)
