Ramesses II  also known as  the Great Ramesses was the third pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty of Egypt. He is often regarded as the greatest, most celebrated, and most powerful pharaoh of the New Kingdom. His successors and later Egyptians called him the "Great Ancestor".Ramesses II led several military expeditions into the Levant, reasserting Egyptian control over Canaan. He also led expeditions to the south, into Nubia, commemorated in inscriptions at Beit el-Wali and Gerf Hussein. The early part of his reign was focused on building cities, temples, and monuments. He established the city of Pi-Ramesses in the Nile Delta as his new capital and used it as the main base for his campaigns in Syria. At fourteen, he was appointed prince regent by his father, Seti I. He is believed to have taken the throne in his late teens and is known to have ruled Egypt from 1279 to 1213 BC.Manetho attributes Ramesses II a reign of 66 years and 2 months; most Egyptologists today believe he assumed the throne on May 31, 1279 BC, based on his known accession date of III Season of the Harvest, day 27.Estimates of his age at death vary; 90 or 91 is considered most likely. Ramesses II celebrated an unprecedented thirteen or fourteen Sed festivals (the first held after 30 years of a pharaoh's reign, and then, every three years) during his reign more than any other pharaoh. On his death, he was buried in a tomb in the Valley of the Kings  his body was later moved to a royal cache where it was discovered in 1881, and is now on display in the Egyptian Museum Follow @luxor.city and @luxorbazaar for more pics Discover Egypt with @travelbluechoice Admin : ★ Great Ramesses II ★ #egypt #egyptology #egypte #egyptian #egyptfans #egyptshots #egypt_eyes #ancientegypt #ancienthistory #ancientcivilization #ancients #ancientworld #ancientruins #ancientegyptian #kemet #kemetic #oldegypt #archeology #maat #horus #heru #historian #egyptiangod #egyptianmagic #ancientkemet #pharaoh #atum #mummy #egyptiantattoo #

Ancient Cats. Cats in Ancient Egypt were worshiped for over 30 centuries. They were a huge part of social and religious practices and were revered for their beauty, finesse and regality. They held divine status. Several deities were depicted as cats and were sculpted and represented with feline-like features. Pointy ears and whiskers included. Mafdet, Bastet and Sekhmet, represented justice, fertility and power respectively. They were praised for their ability to hunt and kill venomous snakes and skeletal remains have been found in tombs - usually fully mummified along with their human counterparts. Killing a cat was considered blasphemous and a serious crime which would result in harsh punishment of the person responsible. Egypt experienced a decline in the worship of cats once the country became a Roman province in 30 BC and steadily dropped off the radar. They’re still cute though. A photo of the Uruk excavation in 1929/30 - Discovery of the statuette of a ‘high priest’ in a vessel. 3000-2000 BC. Uruk-Warka in modern south Iraq can reasonably claim to be the world’s earliest city. Today, this massive site – covering several hundred hectares – lies in the bleak desert zone between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers well to the south of Baghdad. It has an atmosphere of grandeur, abandonment, and calm. This magnificent and uniquely important site was occupied from at least 5000 BC into Hellenistic and later times. In the centuries around 3500- 2800 BC it expanded hugely in size at which time it boasted enormous temple complexes built of mud-brick and decorated with coloured baked clay cones and stone inlay – as on the facing page. At about 3000 BC a massive city wall was constructed around the settlement. We estimate that the city must have housed several tens of thousands of inhabitants. It was at this time that the legendary king Gilgamesh ruled over the city of Uruk – the site’s most ancient name, which has survived into its modern name of Warka. Moreover, the site is believed to be one and the same as the Biblical city of Erech, mentioned in Genesis as one of the first cities established after the Flood.
