This is the fourth release from @lochbrewery A small craft distiller, so there are very limited bottles. Available from the seller door only. So glad I have family in Melbourne to come to my rescue. I may have died if I missed out This is also Loch’s first release that was aged in a European port cask. They used a malt base from their best bitter ale with an abv of 46.9%. These guys do great Gin and Beer as well. So if you live in Melbourne or passing the South Gippsland area it’s worth a visit. Now I just hope my sister doesn’t drink it .... So back to my tasting of a few Aussie drams I shared a week ago. First up, the Hobart Whisky First Release- Bourbon cask 48% abv. You never quite know what to expect with a first release But being from Australia’s whisky capital you would expect good things. Well let me tell you.....I love this stuff. It’s amazing! On first opening, you get this pleasant scent of the sweet beeswax and vanilla. When it hits your mouth... it’s soft, it’s creamy, it’s sweet creme brûlée and toffee. What a beautifully made whisky. These guys should be proud. When the wallet permits, I will definitely try more from this distillery. So glad I got 2 bottles.

So now to our 2nd tasting... Starward Bourbon Cask, 52% abv from Melbourne, Australia. Matured in ex-Maker's Mark & Wild Turkey bourbon casks for 4.5 yrs with only 1200 bottles. A well produced Whisky by any standards. It has this beautiful natural golden amber colour. The first thing that really hits you is the smell of banana then followed by butterscotch, maybe the butterscotch lollies I remember as a kid. A slight strawberry and Melon in the background. It’s a little dry, slightly peppery, oak with caramel and banana again on the palate. I found this enjoyable and a pleasure to drink. OK, Hellyers Road up next One of the largest whisky distilleries in Australia. Now I have to be honest here so stick with me. My first bottle of Hellyers Road Whisky was bought about 10yrs ago. Maybe my palette was a bit immature as I thought it was terrible, much like a golden paint stripper 10yrs later I still have 3/4 of a bottle. Now rewind to 6 months ago I received a bottle of the Hellyers Road 16yr as a member of the whisky club. It’s been sitting in my cupboard a little reluctant to try. As I was sitting down with a mate to compare some Aussie whisky I knew this 16yr First fill American Oak casks @ 47.5% abv had to be included. Well, how things change or I’ve changed. This is great. It’s quite unlike the Hellyers Road I remember. Absolutely beautiful natural golden amber with notes of vanilla, caramelised apples and barley. Its sweet, smooth, buttery with butterscotch and orange. I will definitely be finishing this bottle I just may revisit the 10yr. The very last eight Twin Packs of The Starward Seafarer are up for auction and set to be sold by London’s @whisky.auction online from now until June 11, with proceeds going to charities @scarfcommunity (Australia) and @drinkscharityuk (UK). A total of 110 Seafarer Twin Packs were bottled earlier this year at 48% ABV, selling out within hours via the Starward Distillery and Starward.com.au. The last remaining eight Seafarer Twin Packs, comprising 2 x 500ml cask strength (54% ABV) bottles, are elegantly presented in a custom wooden box along with a Starward pin. Proceeds from the auction will be donated to two charities; @scarfcommunity – a social enterprise that helps young people seeking protection and those from refugee backgrounds find jobs while adding flavour and heart to the local hospitality industry and; The Benevolent Society @drinkscharityuk (UK) – a charity that provides practical, emotional and financial support to current or former drinks industry employees who face difficult circumstances.
