The cucumelons are enjoying our warm weather at the moment. It's the first time I've grown them in the garden and they are doing well. They are such a dainty little vine to grow that I will give more space to next year. #permaculture #permaculturegarden #thehappygardeninglife #urbanpermaculture #kitchengarden #organicfood #organicallygrown #backyardfood #backyard #ilovemygarden #kitchengarden #growfoodnotlawns #homegrown #homegrownfood #yum #freshisbest #sustainablygrown #raisedgardenbeds #growwhatyoulove #growwhatyoueat #eatwhatyougrow #cucumelons #freshfood #growyourown #eatrealfood #harvest #growfoodnotlawns

Physalis Peruvians has many names.... The Cape Gooseberry, Goldenberry, Husk Cherry, Peruvian Ground Cherry, Poha and Poha Berry to name a few. In Australia we call it a Cape Gooseberry. It's considered an annual in temperate regions and a perennial in the tropics. However here in our temperate zone it's most definitely a perennial because our winters aren't cold enough to kill the dormant root system. Cape Gooseberries are a member of the Solanaceae family making it a distant relative of the potato, tomato and eggplant but their flavour is sweet with a strong tang. You'll need trellising to keep the fruit up off the ground because these bushy beauties can grow up to two meters tall in ideal conditions. For best results plant Cape Gooseberry in fertile soil with good drainage, next to a wall that gets plenty of sun. (They don't like strong winds so a fence is a good way to protect them.) Feed them weekly, water them daily and give them potash once a month to increase flowering. You can harvest the fruit when the husk is papery and dry. Gently split the husk open a bit and if you see the very orange fruit inside, it's ripe. If it still has tinges of green, leave it be. You can also wait for them to fall off the plant completely but it's not easy to crawl under the bush to collect them so if you've got small ones about, offer them the task of daily foraging for gold. Once harvested, you can store Cape Gooseberries in their husk for up to 40 days while you look up the amazing array of recipes for jams, preserves and dessert ideas for your bounty. Alternatively you can test your powers of control and freeze them out of their husks until you're ready to use them. It took all my might to gather this 2 kilos of tangy deliciousness but knowing what the jam is like, I'd say it was worth it! Quick Tip ✔ 'Stopping' is the term used to describe the trimming of vines immediately after the fruit. By doing this you're allowing the vine to concentrate its energy into the growth of that one pumpkin or melon as opposed to several, resulting in much bigger sized fruit. It also means your plant is more compact which is great for smaller gardens. I know it's hard to do when you can see babies starting to form further along the vine but your plant will certainly reward you for your courage. "Rouge de Marmande' is a French heirloom variety, that is rich in flavour but low on seeds. Considered a 'determinate' tomato, this plant will only grow to a maximum height of around 1.5 meters as opposed to the 'indeterminate' varieties like Tommy Toe, which can grow up to 6 metres tall! That means you won't need a whole lot of trellising or space to grow this delicious variety. In fact all 'determinate' tomatoes like Rouge de Marmande are happy growing in good sized pots which makes them ideal for balconies and gardens with limited space. Did you know⁉ Root veg like this beautiful beetroot here, grow best when planted in full sun. ☉ Whereas leafy veg like lettuce, prefer to be in an area with partial shade. ☀ This simple rule of thumb is a great tool when it comes to planting out my seedlings. 4 simple steps to making your own oven roasted tomatoes. 1. Slice your freshly harvested tomatoes into halves and place on trays covered in baking paper, open side up. 2. Sprinkle with sugar and salt to taste. 3. Place trays in an oven set to 100°c for anywhere between 5-8 hours depending on how dry you like them. Check on them every half hour/hour to test their moisture content by gently pressing on them. When they're done to your liking take them out and leave them to cool. 4. Put your now cool, dry tomatoes in jars that have been sterilised in boiling water. 5. Top the jars up with a blend of olive and veg oil and refrigerate. (The blend of oils prevent it from going hard) And that's it! It really is that simple to preserve your homegrown tomatoes and enjoy them all year round. Tørret citrus Two days back, I prepared a lot of fruits for dehydration. Among these, there were three different citrus fruits (lemon, lime and orange) and also ginger. The purpose for these, was to use them for tea. They can either be added to regular tea - we prefer the mild flavors of white tea - or they can make up the tea themselves. It really is a nice treat, when you appreciate a good cup of tea. Later this year, we will experiment with other approaches to making our own tea. Some of our ideas include leaves of mint, raspberry, black currant and fresh spruce needles. How do you prefer your tea? #permaculture #organicliving #selfsufficiency #selfsustainable #kitchengarden #marketgarden #gardening #healthyliving #foodforest #backyardfood #minträdgård #trädgård #køkkenhave #orchard #frugtplantage #homemadetea #dehydration #dehydrator #klarstein #citrustea #lemon #lime #oranges #konservering #driedfruit #driedfruits #ginger
