Who would buy a children’s book about empathy and empathy's kryptonite? Tag an empath. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I write about empathy a lot. I was actually lucky enough to have an op-ed about empathy published in the @nytimes - this piece is a sort of sequel to that. I’m going to keep talking about empathy because it’s really important to me. BUT, there’s room for misinterpretation when I talk about empathy, and I want to clear it up if I can. When one talks about empathy, it can sound a bit “both-sidesy” and lots of people lean into this in their writing. By “both-sidesy” I mean the view that “both sides” need to have more empathy for one another, the view that “both sides” are just as bad as one another. THAT IS NOT AT ALL WHAT I BELIEVE. I’ve also seen the word “empathy” weaponised against members of oppressed groups in exactly this way, i.e. a white person telling a black person, “You need to have more empathy with my position.” and things like that. I am not writing for those people. To make it very clear, I do not believe that the oppressed need to empathise more with their oppressors. I believe that the oppressors, people with privilege, need to empathise more with those they oppress. Sure, it can be incredibly beautiful, and powerful, when someone from an oppressed group empathises with someone from a privileged group. But that already happens enough. And it is never the duty of the oppressed to empathise with their oppressor, and that can only achieve so much. There’s enough empathy for rich, able-bodied, cis, straight, white men; only people with privilege get to tell their own stories, we hear a lot of those stories, and we all empathise with them sufficiently. But if you want to empathise with people who have very different experiences to you, experiences that you might be shielded from experiencing by your privilege, you have to listen to them. To put yourself in someone else’s shoes you have to be willing to listen when they tell you what their shoes feel like. (Just so it’s clear, “listening” as I use it here, is not something that only people who are able to hear can do. To listen to someone does not have to be auditory. I'm trying to be a bit experimental. I don't want to get too stuck in my ways. I want a way to present simple aphoristic statements that compliments my broader aesthetic. If you frequently find yourself “playing” devil’s advocate for Islamophobic, misogynistic, racist, homophobic, transphobic, classist, or ableist positions, consider the possibility that you are just an Islamophobe, a misogynist, a racist, a homophobe, a transphobe, classist, or ableist. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It is not universally wrong to play devil’s advocate. There are certain instances in which adopting a position for the sake of an argument can be fun, or perhaps, if the opposite position rarely get an airing, it might help to clarify the strengths of the position that you actually do hold. But there are enough people who are sincerely Islamophobes, misogynists, racists, homophobes, transphobes, classist, and ableist. These views already get too much of an airing, and their proponents don’t need your for-the-sake-of-argument assistance. It’s also unlikely to be fun for the person whose safety is on the line in said argument. If you have a lot of privilege and you enjoy playing devil’s advocate, consider the possibility that these arguments are fun for you - and not for your opponent - because it is never your safety that is on the line. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My partner, Kitty, works to support survivors of sexual violence. When men learn this, many of them feel the need to “play devil’s advocate”. Their reasons for doing so are lost on me. Do they really think that Kitty will benefit from hearing the strengths of the argument on the other side?
