I just came back from my friend's chocolate-making party, where, of course, we made chocolate. ⠀ To make this chocolate, we got some sort of warm chocolate and rolled it in our hands. ⠀ ✨ And to make this chocolate with patterns on, we had to get some warm liquid chocolate, and use a spoon to pour it on a transfer sheet. A transfer sheet is basically a sheet of plastic with patterns like this on it. For all the immigrants, the travelers, and the learners (and all of us accidental learners in cross-cultural marriages )... this one’s for you. My Spanish isn’t perfect. When I began teaching it, I had to start searching out movies, podcasts, and books to keep my own fluency up. When I decided to raise my kids in Spanish (back in the US), I knew it would involve homework. We needed books and music and language not from me, and there were so many “mom-phrases” I didn’t know! Around more fluent speakers (or judgey people lol), I get nervous and trip up more. In high pressure situations (like posting publicly on social media ) I second-guess myself like crazy. And guess who feels like this too Yup... our students. I’ve learned to use my non-native Spanish into the classroom as a strength. I get that it can be scary. I get that they understand more than they can express perfectly. I get that their main need is high-frequency structures over and over until they flow out naturally. They can see I’m a learner too. This doesn’t mean we don’t aim for excellence. I work to include all kinds of listening and reading from native speakers and a variety of accents, and I always want to provide the highest-quality input I can. Sometimes I have to take extra time to set up a story or conversation and look up phrases I’m unsure of, instead of being totally spontaneous. It *does* mean I’m really affirming of the process. When my 4-year-old at home says “no sabo,” it’s not an upsetting thing- it’s language in process! When my students are engaged but make a mistake, I don’t sweat it like I used to. I understand some “rules” we teach in Spanish 1 take years to flow naturally (I still hate you, fue vs. era! ) I look more at messages and less at errors. So me, you, them- all the learners who take a chance every time we open our mouths- We’re being brave. Today was one of the best days we’ve had in awhile, for no one reason in particular. Maybe something to do with the time moving forward an hour while we slept with the promise of more daylight in our coming days. Or the fact that 0/4 of us had any sort of notable meltdown. Or the seaside delicious lunch Ivy let us enjoy and the gelato that followed. It could be the naps that we took (i NEVER nap), or the perfect sunshine on our wintered faces, or the family “group hug” that Lucia asked for before bed. I could just keep going on because everything about today was good and easy, and it was just an accumulation of all of the small things. We needed a day like today, and we got it.
