If you have thyroid disease, don’t skip breakfast. Why? Because almost everyone with thyroid disease has some form of adrenal imbalance, and waiting too long to eat in the morning can cause a drop in blood sugar which will then cause the adrenals to kick out cortisol. ➡️ Excess cortisol blocks thyroid hormones, can cause TSH imbalance, and decreases the conversion of FT4 to FT3. Eating regularly throughout the day is an easy step you can take to calm the body, reduce cortisol spikes and balance blood sugar which will, in turn, support thyroid hormone balance. I recommend eating some protein, fat and a small amount of complex carbs within an hour of waking up. If you aren’t hungry in the morning, then I know you’ll have to force yourself to eat at first, but this step will help in the long run! Will bulletproof coffee suffice? ☕️ No. A kick of caffeine, even if combined with healthy fats isn’t the same thing as eating a meal and will stress the adrenals and create further thyroid imbalance. So, you really need to eat some food! And, don’t box yourself in when it comes to breakfast foods. Yes, you can have a smoothie or eggs, but you can also have soup, salads, leftovers, or whatever you feel like! I eat soup several times a week for breakfast and find it a fabulous way to get in a nutrient-dense meal to start my day! SNACK ATTACK GIVEAWAY (swipe to see @marialuciabakes hamper ‍♀️). I’m a serial snacker and always have been. BUT the foods you chose to snack on, can really affect your cravings, energy and mood . Naturally - we all have days where time slips away on us, and we don’t get to prepare snacks, miss a snack, or go hours without eating. Personally, I like to have something every 3/4/5 hours - because otherwise I experience major cravings and can easily binge on my next meal if I get too hungry. . It doesn’t really make a huge difference if you eat 3 huge meals or 6 smalls ones - but it’s a good idea to try and keep your blood sugars relatively stable ❤️ . If you eat a carbohydrate alone - it can cause a rapid blood sugar spike (full of energy all of a sudden) - which in turn may lead to a big drop (more hungry, lethargic, cravings, moody). Have you heard about the “grapefruit diet”? Whilst we’re not fans of any specific weight loss diets here at OB, the benefits of adding grapefruit into your daily routine actually have a scientific backing.⠀ -⠀ A 2006 study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food found that eating just 1/2 a fresh grapefruit before meals “was associated with significant weight loss” and improved insulin resistance in comparison to placebo. ⠀ -⠀ The reason for this effect is most likely in the compounds that it contains. A 2012 study published in the Journal of Food Chemistry found that two compounds commonly present in some citrus fruit, such as grapefruit - naringin and neohesperidin - can effectively reduce blood sugar levels by increasing the uptake of glucose by the cells. This process in general leads to increased metabolism and weight loss.⠀ -⠀ The taste of grapefruit is a mix of bitter, sour and sweet. ✨ It is believed that the modern diet is lacking in bitter and sour tastes. The more bitter and sour foods we eat, the more we will balance out our taste buds and the less we will crave for sweet and salty foods. So the more grapefruit you eat, the more you’ll get used to and start loving its taste! However, in the beginning if it tastes too bitter - you can drizzle a dash of rice malt or maple syrup on it.⠀ -⠀ How to:⠀ Have 1/2 grapefruit before your lunch or/and dinner. Try adding some fresh pieces of grapefruit into your salad leaves or make a salad dressing using grapefruit instead of lemon.
