Many moons ago , I read the novel Shibumi by Trevanian , in fact I read it many times, and I recalled the main character , an assassin named Nicholai Hel (an apt name if ever there was one ) employed a gardener in his chateau. What I remembered was this gardener drank 12 glasses of wine every day! Nicely spaced out throughout his work day of course .. so this struck me then as a very nice way of getting thru a day. Neither drunk nor sober ... And whilst cradling my glass of Rougeard , I remembered this story (Rougeard does this. Makes one ponder if one had to choose one wine to drink daily , this particular maker would be hard to resist..) and I actually contemplated trying this out one day .. I would need 2 bottles of Rougeard though .. Because I’m not a big fan of surprises. Call me boring. . . That’s why I uncorked this Bordeaux from @chateaumaynelalande4 at least five years to early. I wanted to taste it first. And thanks to three hours in my decanter this wonderful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc opened up for a great performance. . . First of all: look at this amazing dark purple colour! Fascinating! In the nose: blueberry, blackberry and a hint of violet. Sooooo nice! ❤️ . . Surprisingly the structure is already smooth and silky on the palate - with fine and well balanced tannins. It’s already a joy. But in five to ten years this wine will be just amazing. So the decision is made: I’ll put some bottles in my wine cellar! . . For me this wine called „Barbár“ from @heimannwines is the first one from Hungary - and it won’t be my last one for sure. . . The wine is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Tannat and Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch). So you have both international as well as national varieties from Hungary. A very interesting blend! . . When it comes to the nose, it’s like a walk through a forest: wild strawberries, moss, leaves and understorey. Very fascinating. And relaxing. I mean ... who doesn’t like to walk through a forest to calm down. Right? . . I adore the powerful and expressive structure on the palate - though it’s a very elegant wine as well. Now raspberries and cassis are joining the game. The tannins are very well balanced. And when you give the wine some air and time they’re getting adorable smooth. ❤️ . . Oh, and have I mentioned that the name „Barbár“ was inspired by a piano piece from Béla Bartók? Listen to the composition! It’s as powerful and expressive as the wine. So liquid music. I love that! ❤️ . .
