1️⃣ DON’T PRESSURE SOMEONE TO SHARE MORE THAN THEY FEEL SAFE SHARING That includes noticing when someone has hit their emotional or physical “limit.” . . 2️⃣ ASK FOR PERMISSION BEFORE YOU VENT OR UNLOAD YOUR THOUGHTS/EMOTIONS A simple “Is this a good time to talk?” or “ I’d really love to share something but I want to make sure you’d had enough time to recharge” can go such a long way. . . 3️⃣ PAY ATTENTION TO BODY LANGUAGE AND PAUSE IF SOMEONE BECOMES RIGID OR TIGHT IN THEIR BODY Sometimes our bodies say no even when the rest of us doesn’t. Our traumas are stored in our body and we can see things in our partner (or friend) that they sometimes can’t. . . 4️⃣ DON’T OFFER SOMEONE ADVICE UNLESS YOU HAVE PERMISSION FROM THEM FIRST. We all want to help. But if we don’t create a safe context to suggest our feedback, we most likely won’t have a willing participant. It can be very violating to receive unwanted feedback. “Would you like some feedback on that?” “I have some thoughts if you’d like to hear them. But I also realize you’re still in the early stage and may need some solo time to process.” . . 5️⃣ DON’T INVALIDATE SOMEONES EXPERIENCE EVEN IF YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND OR AGREE This is one of the biggest ways we violate someones boundaries. We invalidate emotional boundaries when we tell someone they are being “too sensitive” or that their feelings don’t make sense. People are allowed to feel how they feel. Their past and their triggers shape how they will respond to things, and those experiences will always feel valid for them .. especially in the midst of their pain. We invalidate intellectual boundaries when we tell someone “hey that’s not what actually happened.” That is essentially gaslighting .. when we make someone doubt their reality. We can say “you know that’s not how I experienced that .. but I respect and believe that that’s how you saw it.” . . It’s okay to have different experiences. We begin to soften our codependent behaviors when we learn to make space and validate other people’s experiences even when that makes us feel uncomfortable. #coachingwithsilvy . . What am I missing?
