Hormone balancing energy bites! These are one small piece of the puzzle as I come off of birth control after 12 years... My acne has cleared up so much from switching to all-natural skin care and a whole foods high fat diet, but I continue to struggle with hormonal acne (acne under the skin along my jawline) which made me I realize something is up with my hormones. Once I started researching, I realized it’s one of SO many side effects from the pill, which contains manmade hormones that alter the natural hormone regulation of the body. Over the last month I read "Beyond The Pill" by Dr. Jolene Brighten, stocked up on gut healing-liver healing-thyroid healing-nutrient healing-hormone healing (all things affected by BC) foods and supplements, and I'm on day one off the pill! This recipe is from the book and these bites are filled with pumpkin seeds & flaxseeds which are needed to balance estrogen levels during the first 2 weeks of your cycle (which begins on the day of your period).⠀

Flax & pumpkin energy bites (from "Beyond The Pill")⠀
◇ 3/4 cup raw pumpkin seeds⠀
◇ 1/4 cup flaxseed⠀
◇ 1 tbsp chia seeds⠀
◇ 1/4 cup shredded coconut flakes⠀
◇ 1/4 cup cashew butter⠀
◇ 2 tbsp melted coconut oil (I omitted since my homemade cashew butter was a little runny)⠀
◇ 2 tbsp raw honey⠀
◇ 1/2 tsp vanilla extract⠀
◇ Pink himalayan salt⠀
◇ Blend pumpkin seeds, flaxseeds, coconut flakes in a spice grinder (or coffee grinder). In a small bowl, stir the cashew butter, melted coconut oil, vanilla extract and honey. Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl. Line a glass container with parchment paper, roll dough into 8 energy bites & place in the container. I rolled a few of them in cacao powder and a few in shredded coconut for a lil extra garnish. Store in the freezer and enjoy one per day for all the hormone balancing benefits
My health and fitness journey has taken years. It has often been slower than I want, but progress has been made, slowly but surely. I was a pre-diabetic, PCOS, and tired woman even before my Triple Negative Breast Cancer diagnoses. Putting myself through the discipline of making wise food choices and working hard at gaining endurance and strength has taught me valuable lessons. No matter where you are at physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually, don’t give up and keep pressing to become a beautifully healthy person. Boma seems like a fitting name for a South African café owner to christen her latest venue with. Tash Strachan, and partner Cody Nesbit wooed the Westside crowds with their Williamstown café, Kodama. They recently moved further west to Yarraville.
Their Eggs Benny with pulled pork on a potato rosti with smoked chilli hollandaise is definitely a winter warmer.

⠀⠀ Bowl dEats (recipe makes 2 servings): •2 cups cooked brown rice (we used @traderjoes precooked, frozen rice for convenience) •1/2 yellow onion, thinly sliced •1/4 tsp garlic powder or 1 minced clove •1/4 cup broth or water •1 1/2 cups fresh spinach •1/2 cup white beans •1/3 cup feta •1/3 cup sliced almonds •fresh lemon juice + olive oil + black pepper ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀

Directions: sauté garlic and onion in olive oil until translucent. Add in frozen (or precooked) rice and 1/4 cup broth and continue sautéing until most of the broth is absorbed. Add in spinach, beans, and a few good squeezes of lemon, ground pepper, and remove from heat. Continue stirring until spinach wilts and becomes tender. Top with feta and almonds and serve.
