Days of the week with The Very Hungry Caterpillar! I set up this activity for Arlo because he is really interested in days of the week at the moment. What better way to learn about them than with this classic book...and a pill box! I drew the different fruits and food that the caterpillar eats in the book, a sun and a caterpillar onto card and cut them out. I popped them into our Flisat table with rainbow popping corn, our Grapat bugs for little caterpillars and a few sensory tools. At first we went through the book together and he looked and found the correct amount of fruit for each day and put them in the right days on the pill box. On the Saturday page Arlo started just grabbing the different foods as he spotted them in the tub, once he had found them all we popped them back in and I encouraged him to find the pieces of food in the correct order from the left hand side of the page to the right. He had so much fun with this that he asked me to hide all the pieces of food back into the popcorn so he could find and count them all again on his own! With this activity we actually covered a lot more than just days of the week. There was looking and finding, one to one counting, fine motor skills, problem solving, pre reading skills and sequencing of stories. Lots of great language thrown about and when he only had 4 out of the 5 oranges he looked at what he had, compared it to the book and decided he needed 1 more! I love making my playdough kits but I hate that there is a limit to how many I can physically make each month and as a result, many of you miss out. I also hate that I can’t offer international shipping (because my kits are so heavy the postage costs are astronomical) and I know that they aren’t affordable for everyone. So while my playdough kits aren’t going anywhere, I also wanted to create something that was more accessible for everyone, everywhere, on every budget. I wanted to create printable activities that are beautiful, as well as useful, and simple to prepare. Fun and educational things to do when you are at a loose end with your little one, just can’t face the mess of sensory play, or are feeling low on inspiration. . I find it really, really hard to say I’m proud of my work. I’m a perfectionist and a worrier and I fret over every tiny flaw in everything I make and do... But I’m proud of this. Really proud of it. And my hope is that this little bundle of goodness is just the beginning! I have so many more wonderful things planned. . STRAW MAZES || cutting straws with scissors is fabulous for fine motor skill development and for strengthening little fingers. We recently used the cut pieces to make a maze. This activity was great for encouraging creative thinking and strategy skills, and the end result looks quite beautiful. On a side note, I know that single use plastics are terrible for the environment. This is a very old supply that we had at home and they will be disposed of responsibly. We will not be re-purchasing more straws and will not be encouraging people to buy new stocks.
