These are my secret writing weapons - and I’m sharing them with you! . A few years ago, my sister (an English teacher) asked me to write a few paragraphs for a lesson on how to paint ‘word pictures’. . Honestly, I still think those paragraphs are some of the best writing I’ve ever done - and you KNOW how awesome it feels to create something you can read back over and feel truly proud of! . So... want to know the trick I discovered?! . Ok, the lesson was on ‘figurative language’ so the challenge was to fit as many figurative language techniques as I could into each little ‘mini story’. . I’m talking Alliteration, Allusion, Analogies, Anaphora, Assonance, Euphemisms, Hyperbole, Idioms, Metaphors, Oxymorons, Personification, Similes... . And I know that might sound a little daunting, but having a list to work from actually made it really easy and super fun. Especially once I started to notice how they all worked together to create the kind of rhythm and lyricism and vibrancy that I’d always admired in other authors’ writing! . If it worked for me, it can work for you. . So I created these flash cards for YOU, to keep on your desk and help you to be more daring, more experimental and more imaginative in your descriptions - I even included examples! . WARNING: these techniques are potent! A little goes a long way . Now, I’m not here to ruffle any feathers, nor am I here to condemn anyone for their beliefs. . But I’ve been quiet about this part of myself for so long—not even daring to acknowledge it to myself for years—that I simply cannot remain silent any longer. . The #LGBTQ space has grown in leaps and bounds these past years (along with the number of letters in the acronym). Seeing so many people boldly declaring who they are has given me the courage to share this glimpse into my story. . I’m happily married to a man, but that doesn’t make me any less bisexual. It doesn’t mean I “chose” to be straight, and it doesn’t mean that I’m in a polyamorous relationship. I’m in a faithful, committed, happy relationship with only my husband. Being bisexual is simply a part of me—and a part I’m ready to share more openly. . I’m done letting this closet suffocate me. I’m proud of who I am and how far I’ve come. And I’m thankful I get to write stories featuring bisexuals—stories I never got to read as a questioning young person.
