Working on the @carlostaomovement exploration: shifting feet to hands. No where near as controlled, buoyant and light as the man himself but it’s a beginning. It’s interesting for me to observe through watching the video , where the rigidity lies as it feeds back where I felt tentative negotiating the movement. My spine is too straight, losing the buoyancy of a rounded spine and by broadening less across the shoulder blades there is more rigidity than lift - which means the breath is also less full and coordinated. •

There is also that mental fear of toppling over as the feet leave the ground which makes the movement tentative. As I get older I really notice my limitations, they are obvious to me in part because I’m no longer 20 but also because fear starts to set in. Where once before there was not such a thing as comfort zone, an easy ability to just go for it without too much thought, total trust in technique and ability, now the brain overrides; a split second hesitation, translates into less coordination and absolutely less confidence in the journey of the sequence. But the cool thing is that the more I explore the stuff that is less innate - I’m strengthening not just my body but importantly my mind. The movement gets easier because I understand more each time; the feeling of it, the way the breath coordinates with the mechanical movements, and in that way I can teach my mind to stop hesitating. The brain starts communicating better with the body the more that you repeat, negotiate, and enjoy the process. So explore the movement stuff that you don’t feel terribly confident with - keep practicing. You’ll surprise yourself. As my ballet teacher said the other day - “ if you keep doing the stuff that you’re really, really good at, you’ll still be really, really good at it. Do what you’re not good at.” #feettohandstransitions

I suffer from tight hip flexors & IT band from an injury in my L4-L5, L5-S1 that happened 15 years ago. My enthusiasm for indoor cycling keeps my booty tight- along with my hips. Yoga, dance, chiropractics, and anti-inflammatory diet helps a lot. And these movements by @carlostaomovement are simple yet effective. My core is so stimulated that my voice shakes like someone is plucking at my muscles like an ukulele.
