I posted a short clip earlier on my stories of Jude hovering around my plate whilst I ate my lunch, swiping a handful of spaghetti, whilst I joked I have my very own vulture. It prompted someone to message me their disgust, and tell me how I was a neglectful parent, choosing not to teach my child. How I was treating him like he cannot learn and like he was disabled Now as online abuse goes that’s very tame, and I’m lucky that I receive so little. Many of my online friends sadly receive much more and are much more abusive. What puzzled me was this follower had been following my page for over 2 years, and had messaged in the past, a grandmother to an autistic boy. This wasn’t just a random troll. But what this person was seeing, projecting and judging was that I wasn’t bothering to teach my child the important life skill of not taking food from somebody’s plate. In the grand scheme of things that I’d love Jude (and Tommy) to learn over the coming years, I have to admit this ranks pretty low down on the list. What this person wasn’t seeing was the change from a boy who ate an incredibly limited diet a few years ago, who only had 2 dinners that he ate, to the boy who now tries and likes most foods. How did that happen? Well because he decided to try food from my plate. I didn’t force new foods on him, didn’t make him stay in his chair until he’d finished, because with autism and learning disabilities, life doesn’t always work like that. Instead, when there was no pressure Jude chose to come and try things that I was eating. He sniffed them, he touched them, he licked them, and if they passed those tests he’d chew them. Over time it’s seen him develop a passion for food, and now has a much more varied diet. Imagine if I’d have stopped that on day one and not let him touch the food on my plate What you also don’t see in that clip is a boy who was crippled by anxiety, who used to self-harm every day. Who spent most of his time hiding off on his own, in his own little world. Who now spends every second wanting to be with me, wanting to interact with me, and to who the world is slowly opening up.
