Spent a lovely day at the @risdmuseum this past Thursday mending a 1920s work smock during my installation “Darning a Conversation through our French Grey” - it was quite something to be surrounded by all of the other garments honoring the art of repair in the exhibit “Repair and Design Futures”. I will return this Sunday 1-4 for a revolving demo and presentation “The Lost Art of Garment Grooming and Mending in the Modern Age”. Come for a visit and learn the art of garment brushing, blocking a sweater, mending considerations throughout the decades and much more! . . . . . #vintagecotton #1920sfashion #risdmuseum #mending #lostarts #naturalfibers #naturalmaterials #30wears #sustainablefashion #slowfashion #fashionrevolution #mendandmakedo #museuminstallation #darning #slowstitch #textiles #textileexhibition #frenchantiquetextiles #meditativestitching #vintageclothes #ecochic #ecoconcious #ecofashion

Still sick, and beyond over it, and now the littlest one has it too and we are shivering and shaking and sweating and coughing along merrily. Don't want to even talk about it. Have some shirts instead, they are far more beautiful. They really are. There are two linen shirts and one hemp here and I will address them in two posts. First, the linens in this post, which are the shirt on the left and the middle shirt, modelled by my extremely tall and thin mannequin Antoinette. These belonged to the same person, who had the initials LL, and I doubt they have ever been worn. They date from the late 19th or early 20th century, and are absolutely exquisite, both fabric and the making. The fabric is handspun and handwoven linen. The first shirt is very finely-woven, but the fabric is still quite thick. This shirt has a front placket without pleats. I'm going to let the pictures do the talking here, but just to point out the handstitching of the side seams, the inset shoulder gusset, the pleating at the cuffs and back of neck. At first glance it looks as if this one has been partially machine-sewn, but closer inspection and the thickness of the sewing thread leads me to believe that this has been completely handsewn, by a someone who was an absolute mistress of their trade. But then the whole shirt is a display of consummate collaborative skill – someone who knew about growing and processing linen handed it on to someone who knew how to spin and then weave, and then finally the cutting and sewing. Just as an aside, how many collective hours do you think might have gone into this shirt? 20? 30? 50? It's crazy when you think about it but this is literally how long it takes to make a garment completely from scratch, including the growing of the fibre, the processing (not a small job with linen and hemp) and the spinning and weaving. They measure approximately 59cm across the front lying flat, so around-the-bust/chest measurement of 118cm, they will outlive you, and they are simply the best examples of their kind I've come across so far. €150 each – message me

Forget Louis Vuitton and Chanel, I'm putting up some real luxury this morning, things that really are rare and unobtainable. Here are the first of the chevron-woven pieces. 19Th century deadstock! I don't know whether these are tablecloths, which they well might be, or bathtowels, which they well might be as well (resident textile expert thinks tablecloths – probably nappe de vigneron – vineyard tablecloths, I think they are bathtowels, RTE is almost certainly right as knows lots more than me, but in the end, they are extraordinary!). What I do know is that these pieces are for the textile geeks, the fibre nerds, the weaving obsessives, and that I can count the number of times I've come across chevron-woven hemp on one hand. And this is the first time with red stripes. The red is added using dyed cotton thread, as it usually is in the linen tea-towels. They are also unused, from the colour, which is still a bright beautiful creamy natural hemp, and the texture, although being chevron-woven they have more give and elasticity than tabby-weave. These two are in perfect condition, they both have a plain monogramme CM, they measure 97x148cm, and they are €95 each. Kind of, really, collectors items for people obsessed with handspun handwoven very old things. If anybody would like the pair, together they are €180. Message me :) - I will put up some more later this eve, including the magnificent monogrammed one which featured in yesterday's post. #frenchantiquetextiles #weaverofinstagram #textileobsessives #textilenerdsofinstagram #findyourtribe #chevronwoven #travelsintextiles #realluxury
