Here are two Indienne textiles in the collections of the Musée de la Toile de Jouy; on the left, a printed cotton from France by Oberkampf’s factory in Jouy-en-Josas, inspired directly by Indian block printed textiles. and on the right, an early 18th century print from India itself showing where the inspiration came from for this new genre of printed European textiles. * The majority of pictures of antique textiles that we post on our IG account are of documents in our own archive, and if not, we always state our source . It is too easy, and rather boring, to just copy pictures out of books or off the web, and without giving any credit as to the source, but some people do. I find it rather dishonest. This design is almost certainly by Oberkampf's factory in Jouy-en-Josas, and the pattern has hints of "batons rompus", or 'broken sticks' to it. This was a Chinoiserie inspired style where all the natural floral forms became very stylised and geometric. You can see it developing here on some of the pink flowers. Eventually there were no curvy lines. In French there is a saying “je vois le ciel bleu” which translates as I see the blue sky but literally used it means that you are finally seeing an end in sight, or a new beginning. My house is now cleared (my atelier therefore an overflowing abundance of hoarded brocante treasures). I feel SO much calmer to have our house back to looking like a house and not an antiques warehouse. On the other hand, I now feel the pressure to start photographing and listing some of my many hoarded treasures.... ha ha ! These are just to tease as I don’t think I can bring my heart to sell my 18th century indigo collection but don’t worry there is tons more wonderful things just waiting to be listed in Exquisite Threads on Etsy!
