Oh sheet! I saw @simply.living.well talking about making a slow home, how we talk about slow fashion often but what about slow homemaking and consumerism in general? ✨Sometimes it feels bedder to hit a big box store, know you'll be able to find everything you need, and be able to finish your space quickly. There's a lot of ampleafication for this type of homemaking on the internet today, people have such beautiful spaces and can tag everything they bought for you to be able to replicate it. As @simply.living.well puts it, 'haven't you ever wondered who makes that stuff, what materials were used, and how long it will last?' Sometimes I get impatient and want something right meow, but I’ve found all the good secondhand pieces take time to hunt down. It's expensive in time but usually much cheaper in actual cost, and the pieces always make me as happy as a bed bug bc they have a great story accompanying them. Take for example this rug, it was $40 from a community yard sale (my fav). I bought it almost a whole year before I was able to use it, but I knew it would be great so it was worth the wait. (Swipe to see my bedroom inspiration.) ⚡️Or this bed frame I found for $30 at a local thrift store. What a releaf it was to find after months of searching for something mid century, low and wood- this baby checks all the boxes. ✔️Nothing else mattress when you find THAT piece you've been hunting. If we want to get specific, my sheets are secondhand, my throw pillow I made from a thrifted curtain, and my cat was rescued from the side of the road so he counts too. Let me frame it up for you, I know these pieces are going to last bc they have already stood the test of time & I'm able to pull them from the waste stream to give them new life. Slow and steady wins the race in my book. I can't beleaf I didn't want to show you this space bc it's missing art and 'finishing' touches- but what is finished anyway? Ps. During the summer be sure to stop at some garage sales or thrift shops! You never know what you’ll find for your classroom! Picture 1 is an old spinning spice rack I bought for 50 cents! It’s now my “fancy” pen holder as my students call it! Picture 2 and 3 is of another type of spice rack I found for $2.00! It’s perfect size to organize crayons and it hangs on the wall!! garage sale season is in full bloom

This is probably the second best garage sale day we’ve ever had—everything here cost us $85. If you want the stories for everything, read on! - - - I was buying a 1999 Pikachu toy from an older couple today at a garage sale and they were talking to us about all of the video games their son had growing up, and they weren’t sure if he’d part with any of his stuff, but “hey, do you like Atari?” The man left the garage for a minute and came back with a filthy box overflowing with cords, an NES, an Atari 1050, and an Atari 800XL—they were originally going to throw it all away but said that we could have it all for $20 if we wanted - - - Because we were still interested in games, that same couple called their son on the spot to see if he wanted to sell any Nintendo games. He said he’d look them up to price them and then bring them over. We left and came back a few hours later and the son had actually dropped off a bag full of NES games and priced the lot at $25 - - - We went to an indoor sale and found an empty GameCube case for Twilight Princess on the floor, so we asked if they had anything else like that. They didn’t, but “are you gamers? We have this” and she led us to their TV which had this SNES hooked up to it with all of these games, and she let us buy the entire lot off of her for $40 (she also let me take the empty GameCube case, but she was very confused as to why somebody would want that )
