POSTERIOR TIBIALIS REHAB . While most people think of the posterior tibialis affecting the arch of the foot, it also performs plantar flexion and inversion of the foot and ankle. Here are some basic exercises to strengthen this muscle. Think “down and in” for most of them. . Heel Raise - plantar flexion with a ball ensures good positioning throughout the movement . Banded Inversion - isolated strengthening through a full range of motion . Ball Squeeze - isometrics may be useful for positional strengthening or painful tendons . Windshield Wiper - try to keep the big toe down like you’re squashing a bug . Controlled Articular Rotation - shortened range of active motion to focus on the posterior tibialis . Plantar fasciitis causes soreness or tenderness of the sole of the foot under the heel, which sometimes extends into the medial (inside) arch. Increased plantar fascia thickness was found to be associated with symptoms and altered compressive properties of the fat pad (under heel) in those w/ heel pain. Changes in plantar fascia thickness were found to be positively associated w/ changes in pain levels for individuals w/ plantar fasciitis. pain-related fear of movement was found to be the strongest single contributor to disability. ➖Cause & Associated Risk Factors➖ 1️⃣Decreased ankle dorsiflexion ROM (ankle toward body) 2️⃣High Arch 3️⃣Excessive Running, Jumping 4️⃣Foot intrinsic muscle weakness 5️⃣High BMI 6️⃣Poor shock absorption during jumping/running tasks ➖Treatment➖ Stretching the calf (increases dorsiflexion range of motion) and plantar fascia help reduce pain and discomfort of the sole of the foot. ➖Exercise➖ 1️⃣Calf/arch stretch with towel: Hold stretch for 3 mins or intermittent (20 second) holds for a total of 3 mins. 2️⃣Great Toe Extension with Cross Friction Massage Grasp toe and extend back to maximum stretch. Stretch should be felt in the arch. Apply gentle cross friction massage with index and middle finger for 1-3 minutes. 3️⃣Plantar Fascia Rolling with Ball Place ball under sole of foot.
