The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles sponsored the restoration of two of the unique lighting fixtures at the American Legion Post in Hollywood with proceeds from one of our Casino Moderne fundraisers. The Post has been renovating their theatre which is now finished and continues work on other areas of this 1929 building. Here are the answers from our last post about Tacomas three oldest buildings: . No. 3- Hosmer House, 311 S. 9th St. Built in 1875. The home originally faced St. Helens. In 1904 it was turned and moved a short distance to face S. 9th. . No. 2- St. Peter’s Church, 2910 N. Starr St. Built in 1873. The building took only 10 days to construct and was once home to “America’s oldest bell tower,” originally made from a 300-year-old fir tree stump. . No. 1- Granary at @fortnisquallymuseum. Built in 1850. The building was moved from its original location in what is now DuPont in the 1930s. Fort Nisqually was rebuilt as part of President Roosevelt’s New Deal program that helped bring the US out of the Great Depression. . If you’re being really technical, the Factor’s House at Fort Nisqually could also be on the list as it was built in 1855. . A few people suggested the @jobcarrcabin as one of the oldest. The original cabin (1865) would’ve been in the running but the current building is a replica built in 2000. . We’d also be remiss to not mention the fact that these buildings, while historically significant and worthy of preservation, were not by any means the first structures built here. Indigenous populations thrived in this region long before any of these structures existed. . As part of #historicpreservationmonth we are shedding light on different parts of our history. Here's a little animal history from @humanesocietytacoma In 1888, an intoxicated logger brought a bear cub to town and was kicking it in an attempt to get it to perform. A man protested and summoned a justice of the peace when the logger refused to stop. This incident is said to be responsible for the formation of a Tacoma humane society, designed primarily to protect children and draft animals. The society gradually moved its focus to humane education as industrialization decreased the prevalence of work animals in the city and specific child welfare agencies were developed. In the decades following, The Humane Society responded to the changing needs of its community. The society boarded dogs of servicemen and American Japanese interned during World War II, published pamphlets on animal care, and created educational programs for schools. In 1951, the society received authorization to operate the city’s animal control facilities, and continues to provide contracted services for many local municipalities. In the last half of the 20th century, The Humane Society focused largely on protecting dogs and cats, solving the burgeoning pet overpopulation problem, and developing innovative Humane Programs to serve the entire community. With the increasing recognition of the therapeutic value of pets in the 1980’s, The Humane Society developed programs to take shelter pets to nursing homes and other care facilities, to participate in a local dog-training program at the Women’s Correctional Center, and to promote shelter pet adoptions. For 130 years, The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County is still the state's largest animal welfare agency. We find loving homes for more than 6,000 pets a year, reunite thousands of lost pets with their owners, provide medical care for ill and injured shelter pets, and offer comprehensive low-cost spay-neuter programs.
