My friend and I managed to squeeze in 2 speedy games of Orléans today, which I’ve been dying to play again for a while now (thank you for humouring me @chocolatereeses26)
I had no strategy in mind in the first game and just went for a little bit of everything (goods, buildings, money). It failed miserably (I lost with a score of 80), especially since I wasn’t drawing the right people and lost my monks to the plague The second game went much better; I made sure that I had the lead on the farmer track, snagged a few tech cogs and got the gunpowder tower + the tailor shop building early on. This, along with better optimisation of my people placement, got me my new high score of 174 points!
Orléans was originally a 9/10 on my first play because the bag-building aspect was so unexpectedly fun. I also really enjoyed the game’s optimisation puzzle where you have to make use of the people you get, even if they don’t fit with your original plans. Sure, it’s annoying when you unluckily take out 3 farmers in a row and your monk dies in a plague, but it’s pretty funny in hindsight!
It’s still fun, but the imbalance and low replayability of the game compared to other midweight Euro games really bring my rating down Every game starts with the same people, and it feels like there are clear optimal moves that you must make early on e.g who wouldn’t get a knight within the first few turns to draw more people?
The buildings also feel quite imbalanced; being able to draw two extra people from the gunpowder empire is so powerful, particularly when combined with tech cogs. The official variant where players remove a few buildings does make it more interesting though.
Orléans is also the most multiplayer solitaire game I’ve ever played! I prefer games that don’t have mean take-that mechanisms and instead use indirect player interaction (e.g blocking your opponent in worker placements), but Orléans’ heads-down gameplay was too solitaire even for me.

✨Century: Spice Road |❣️7.5/10 | 1 play
My boyfriend and I played half of the tutorial in Fog of Love at our local games store (we stopped midway because he didn’t like the game ), so I’ll introduce it to someone who’s more interested in the role-playing aspect. We also played a game of Century: Spice Road, which I won, 74-41.
My boyfriend seemed to give up halfway and bought way too many Market cards and not enough point cards. He got another market card in the last round even though it was clear that I was about to buy my 6th market card He found the game very boring, and that’s partially my fault—ever since I introduced him to heavier strategy games, he usually refuses to play anything below a BGG complexity of 3/5
I don’t think Century is very groundbreaking or special, but it’s still pretty good for what it is—a quick, light game with a hand management aspect similar to but much simpler than Concordia. I definitely prefer Splendor though (a game that it’s often compared to). The engine-building aspect of Splendor is more satisfying and there’s more player interaction + strategy because you can reserve cards.
That being said, I’m still glad that I’m picking up the Golem version soon— I need a wider variety of light games because they’re so much easier to get to the table Do you think Century is a Splendor killer? Or is Splendor still the better classic?
✨Clans of Caledonia |❣️8/10 | 1 play
2p Clans of Caledonia with my bf tonight What we thought would be a 1.5h game turned into a 3h AP fest He won as usual, 202-176 (we made an error in the contract scoring in the photo)
Since I always seem to be short on money in resource management games, I employed lots of workers to build up my cash reserve, which I then used to buy much-needed goods to fulfil orders. My boyfriend was more strapped for cash than I was (a shocking first ), especially since he went for more resources early on to fulfil the extra orders that Clan Buchanan gave him.
I love the economic aspects of the game, especially the buy/sell market—it adds lots of tactical play in a very strategic game. The tobacco/cotton/sugarcane scoring was also thematic and meant that I was constantly looking at what goods my bf had so that I could lower their end-game value. These features really added to the AP though because of the constant maths calculations I was redoing, on top of every other way to score points—there are sooo many options on your turn!
It’s a good 2p game—the map felt tight and still had lots of interaction. Like all multiplayer games though, the game loses some of its potential at 2p e.g neither of us built much grain or whisky, and the market was quite static for certain goods, which detracts from the interesting tactical gameplay.
Other than that, I think the only flaw IMO is that the game felt more like maths homework at times than entertainment I can see this game becoming an 8.5-9 for me but I’ll have to play it more to see if it becomes less overwhelming over time.
