Another day, another bag of crap picked up . ⁣ Twice a week I stuff a bin bag in my bag and pick up litter on the walk home from taking my girls to school .⁣ ⁣ My walk is not through dirty city streets. I’m lucky that even though I live in SE London, there’s a route to school I can walk that is lined by nice houses, through woodlands and a park . ⁣ For some reason, this makes the volume of litter all the more heartbreaking. It must be being deliberately thrown out of car windows or dropped by folk who can’t be arsed to hang on to it until they get to a bin . ⁣ In this country, this is how plastic (directly) makes its way into the ocean. It’s blown around, until it reaches waterways that eventually lead to the sea . ⁣ I know for a fact that no-one reading this will be contributing to this. BUT (sanctimonious comment alert) walking on by, ignoring the pending disaster in the gutter, is neglecting a community responsibility we all have to make up for the fact that some f*ckers will continue to drop litter, no matter what. It would be so lovely if we could be less ‘it’s not my mess, why should I pick it up’ and more ‘this is my neighborhood and I should contribute to keeping it clean’. It only takes a minute to pick stuff up. This was Durban Harbor South Africa just a few days ago, plastic trash EVERYWHERE! This is truly disgusting and it’s only getting worse every new day...remember, it’s expected that there will be more plastic than fish in our waters by 2050 so it’s time we take a stand RIGHT NOW before it’s too late! We simply cannot keep using our oceans, and our planet, as one giant trash can because the consequences are too horrific to even think about. Litter is not only usually non-biodegradable, but can also be a real danger to wildlife. We did a community litter pick at the weekend, and the amount we had to clean up in a small area was pretty disgusting. Working on a blog post about the experience and our findings, which will hopefully be up tomorrow.
