When it comes to fighting #breastcancer, mammograms are often considered the first line of defense. And yet, anyone who has had a #mammogram knows the gut-wrenching anxiety that comes with waiting for the exam results. If the #mammogram is labeled “inconclusive,” that anxiety skyrockets to a new level. For inconclusive mammograms, this #breastimaging tool – called contrast enhanced spectral mammography (#CESM) - can offer decisive answers in less than seven minutes, using the same mammography equipment, in the same room, with the same staff. “Overall, it’s been a fantastic tool in shortening the time between the initial diagnosis and the treatment plan. There are always discussions within the IG community about honesty and sharing both the good and bad. So, in light of that, I thought it was time I shared what’s been going on with me and why I haven’t been able to write lately. Also, it might help to save someone’s life.⁣ ⁣ I was diagnosed with breast cancer in June. I had surgery (a lumpectomy and sentinel node removal) just over a week ago. I’m sore but on the mend. I received my pathology results today. My margins are clear, but 1 out of the 5 nodes removed was positive for cancer. Unfortunately that means I will have to have chemotherapy as well as radiation treatment. The surgeon assured me that this cancer is curable and they are just working on the right treatments to cure me. But I’m still terrified to my very core.⁣ ⁣ What I really wanted to share and let all the ladies out there know (and the folks that love them) is that when I found this lump, I immediately went for a mammogram. The mammogram came back clear - negative - no cancer found. But the mammogram was 100% wrong. As it turns out (and which nobody ever told me), ladies with dense breast tissue should ALWAYS have a secondary ultrasound, because tumors, lumps, and masses do not always show up on mammograms, especially for women with dense breast tissue. My tumor did not show up on the mammogram at all - even though I could feel it and it was 2.3cm in size. The only way they identified the tumor was through the subsequent ultrasound. I’ve been told on several occasions during past mammograms that my breast tissue was dense. But never, not once, not ever was I told that dense tissue indicated secondary ultrasound protocol. But now I know, and I want you and every lady I know to know this important information too. It could save your life. Spread the word, check your breasts regularly, and always insist on an ultrasound if your tissue is dense or you simply aren’t sure.⁣ ⁣ PS: If you see a bald lady show up on this IG feed over the coming weeks, that lady with no hair will be me.
