A few weeks ago I went to our local museum and took a few pictures of one of the panels of a 15th century chest from their collections. I also measured the height and width and then I went home and spent a few days fooling around with my compasses trying to decode the pattern. I finally got it and could start the dearly sought carving. This is no knife work, but heavy chunky mallet work using gouges with a diameter corresponding to the gothic arches in question. Heavely inspired by @peterfollansbee I've wanted to do something like this for a long time and I have to say it felt pretty awesome! Although I realised quite soon that the pattern wasn't going to be as free hand as was my initial plan, it was good training anyway. Also a big thank you to my friend @bonhasbjorn who donated a perfect piece of oak! I would love to do the whole chest now, or medieval furniture like it but I need to get my hands on some nice oak log so I can get the planks riven properly.
