Loving myself isn’t about loving the way I look. It’s about loving myself the way I would love a young child. (thanks to @isabelfoxenduke for that idea!) This mindset shift was crucial in my food and body recovery. I will not use harsh words, restriction, guilt, shame or fear towards myself (or others). If I wouldn’t do it do a child I am not doing to to myself. Being sick often reminds us how to be gentle with ourselves. It’s ALSO a time where the big bad voice of “you don’t deserve THIS MUCH rest” or “I can’t believe you aren’t getting anything ELSE done today” or “you SHOULD at least be doing...” starts to creep in. Honestly our culture doesn’t really know what to do with sick. We have to be “sick enough” to warrant time off from work or other obligations, to ask for help from loved ones, to choose to rest, or to take medication. And if we are too sick for too long then something must be “our fault”. The fact we need to blame someone or something for BEING SICK is quite interesting. I love noticing when these old patterns of conditioning rise up, whether it’s in relationship to my weight, my appearance, or my health.
