Pantelleria is a small, beautiful volcanic island southwest of Sicily. Battista Belivisi was born and raised on the island and study agronomy in Palermo. After he finished school, he decided to return to Pantalleria and collaborated with Gabrio Bini of @serragghia winery, where he grew the grapes and made wine. After 11 years Battista finally decided to create his own domaine, that was the beginning of Abbazia San Giorgio. Located on the outskirts of the village of Khamma, he cultivate 8 acres of vines. Divided into small plots 900 feet above sea level, the vines are on average 60 years old. Two thirds are cultivated with #Zibibbo grapes, while the remaining are Carignano, Nerello Mascalese, and Pignatello, known by the natives as Nostrale. The head-trained vines grow in independent bushes close to the soil and in this way are better able to protect their fruit from heavy winds, scant rainfall, and harsh terrain. Arianna Occhipinti is the niece of @giustoocchipinti from the winery COS. In her teens, she began to apprentice with her uncle before moving on to viticultural school. She returned to Sicily and launched her own endeavor, determined to make wines in a more natural way. In 2004, Arianna was 21 at the time, she bought a hectare of land, on the slopes of the mountains Iblei, around Vittoria in the southeastern Sicily, and implanted her first vineyard there. Today, Arianna owns 25 hectares, they are certified-organic and she features only native Sicilian varietals like Frappato, Nero d'Avola Siccagno, Albanello and Zibibbo, aka Muscat of Alexandria. There is zero irrigation in her vineyards in this hot, windy climate. Cover crops including fava beans and other useful plants grow between every other row.  New plantings are massale selections only. “Wine made with only grapes, well-kept vineyards and healthy soil.” This is the mantra of #Castellano winegrower Alfredo Maestro, a bright light in the Ribera del Duero. Alfredo started making wine in the late 90’s and has decided to farm organically from the very beginning. Over the past few years, Alfredo has been seeking out neglected parcels around the Ribera del Duero and the nearby Madrid to make wine from. Alfredo has accumulated 9 hectares and two small bodegas, one located in his native Peñafiel in the Ribera del Duero, where his father helps with the bodega work, and the other in the Navalcarnero area, southwest of Madrid. Since the early 2000’s his wines have contained no additives at all, including sulphur. #ElMarciano comes from 70 year-old Garnacha vines grown on decomposed granite soils at a staggering 1,150 m. elevation in the upcoming region of Gredos mountain range & Lovamor is made with fruit sourced from low-yielding 120-year-old Albillo bush-vines. These kind of bottles really bring the magic✨ Angnès and Jean Foillard are in the top emblematic producers in the Beaujolais that have been pushing gamay to the highest of its potential! Working on 8 hectares, Jean was one of the first to walk alongside Marcel Lapierre. His vinifications are traditional carbonic macerations with almost no filtration and a minimum of sulfer at the bottling so not to alter the expression and complexity of the terroir and the fruit. The vines of Côte de Py are situated at around 260 meters of altitude, similar to many grands crus from Burgundy and the decomposing Schist soils of Morgon brings an incredible finesse and minerality. Rennersistas Waiting for Tom Weiss 2017 . Blend of Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay with the predominance of this first grape variety. A spontaneous night stop in @enotecalamescita with @michele__rosess meeting @angeloconsorte & @long_john_trippa . . Having - '13 here was one of these moments I will never forget. It is probably the best and most expressive Pinot Noir I've ever had. Forward tones of: Fungi, wet forest ground after rain, moss, peat, gentle green herbs, light wood, some eucalyptus, balsamico and concentrated juicy berries. . Before we had another really good moment with Kai'13 that was aromatically flourishing amazingly when it opened up. It was really rewarding to have some patience with this wine. What a beauty. . When we went deeper into the night wine was flowing generously, so I thought let's kill a liter, interact, and share it with the staff and everybody around us at the bar, because this was the perfect thing to do in this warm social atmosphere of equality, that was so amicable and peaceful. After that others shared with us, then came and . . is a really nice bar in the area of Garbatella. It is a bit remote and you need to know about it to find it. It is local and traditional and I think I was the only foreigner. All around you there is a wide selection of very cool wines for very fair prices, with some really spectacular bottles, even from Georgia. . .
