NEW NAME // WHO DIS Goodbyeee scrubs n grubs, hello NORTHWEST NURSE. This next step feels more like a new book than a new chapter, so I figured it needed a new name! ‍⚕️ And with that, it’s time to announce what I’ve been scheming up for y’all!!! They say to create what you wish existed, soo... ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️ NURSING STUDENT GROUP MENTORSHIP. This isn’t your typical nursing student group with mnemonics to remember lab values or tips on how to differentiate first-degree from second-degree heart block. Nope, this is all about YOU. You, the whole person, the lovely person, who decided that you cared a whole heck of a lot about other people’s well-being, so you decided to go to nursing school, and then kinda sorta maybe forgot about your own well-being in the process. We’ll be talking self-care tips, sharing healthy recipes, discussing what to do when your clinical instructor or preceptor is mean to you, navigating figuring out “next steps,” and so much more. I’m still in the creation process, but I COULD NOT WAIT to tell y’all! Also, I NEED YOUR HELP. What would YOU want to see out of a group like this?! What non-study do you feel like you need (or needed if you’re a grad)?! Drop them in the comments below, and better yet, tag a friend to share their input as well! ‍♀️ Already know you want in?! Last Surgery Rotation, here are my top 3 tips to succeed! Comment below if you love being in the Operating Room ⬇️⬇️ 1 - Know your anatomy! This seems so simple but specifically know your surgical anatomy. What you learned in class is important but take the time to read about the procedures and find out what landmarks are important for each case. Not only will you impress the surgeon but you will actually know what’s going on! 2 - Watch the procedure on YouTube. There are tons of surgical videos on YouTube so go watch the procedure you’re going to be scrubbed in for so you know what to expect. You will be more helpful and more importantly you will be able to ask educated questions to push your understanding even further! 3 - Arrive Early and Stay Late!! Surgery isn’t a 9-5 job, so show your attending and residents that you are willing to work. Ask if it’s ok to Pre round on your patients so you have time to read up on any changes overnight you are unsure of. BONUS: try to come up with your own plan of care in-case someone asks what you would want to do for a patient. There are many more tips but I would say those are my top 3! Where are my surgeons at @coffeeandscrubs @drtorkmd @dr.kessiena @dr.edwardchamata What would you recommend?!? . I successfully put in my first baby IV . During nursing school clinicals, I would walk around and ask if there were any skills, specifically IVs, I could help with. I was fortunate to do a lot of IVs especially in OB triage and the ER and I became pretty confident. But when it came to peds or neonates, we were not allowed to start IVs or do many skills as a student (which was completely understandable!) . When I started my job, I was a little nervous to even do a heel stick on a baby. A lot of babies in the NICU have some form of IV or PICC. If they are brand brand new and super sick, we will do a UVC/UAC (umbilical venous catheter/umbilical arterial catheter). Unfortunately, a regular IV only lasts around 1-3 days because their veins are so small and fragile. If a baby needs medication, like antibiotics/TPN/lipids for longer than 4-5 days; we will put in a PICC line. . I’ve had two previous opportunities to start an IV but I’ve never been successful until yesterday! It was an exciting little milestone for myself, but I also have to remember that the babies I treat are extremely sick and that is my ultimate focus. I took a couple seconds to be proud of myself but went right back to “nurse game mode”. . What’s your favorite skill‍⚕️

MY FIRST MISTAKE AS A NEW GRAD ‍♀️ . . Are you starting nursing school this fall? Going to finish in less than a year? Did you just graduate? Are you still in your first year as a brand new Registered Nurse? This post is for YOU. ‍ . . I will NEVER forget one of the first mistakes I ever made as a new grad. Here goes!... One of the biggest processes at the end of a mother and infant’s stay in the hospital is the discharge procedures. We always say that discharge teaching starts on admission because there is SO MUCH to teach and reiterate to all mothers and fathers. From demonstrating proper bath-time technique, to diaper changes, supporting of the infant’s head and neck, proper sleeping positions, THE LIST GOES ON! . . So I finished up my teaching and forgot TWO vital components. 1️⃣Removing the HUGS tag from the baby’s ankle. (These protect the infants from being taken.) So when the family left the unit, the WHOLE ALARM SYSTEM starting going off and all the nurses start running around like crazy looking for the baby.... OOPS! “That was me!” I immediately yelled and ran towards the family leaving so I could cut off the tag and THEN 2️⃣ I realized I had left the cord clamp on the baby’s umbilicus. OMG ‍♀️ “How stupid can I be?” I thought... And of course I cried a little and told my supervisor how sorry I was and guess what happened. next? I will never forget this...She looked me straight in the eye and said, “Kat, did anybody get hurt? Is everyone safe? Do people make mistakes?” I was instantly relieved, and def still cried a bit hahah. (shoutout to my AMAZING supervisor BTW for taking that time with me and creating a teaching moment that has lasted a lifetime.) . . But we ARE NOT perfect and we will mess up sometimes! That’s OKAY! Just learn from your mistakes, always be honest and MOVE ON! ‍♀️ You’ve got lives to safe babyyyyy!!!! . . Which experience would you like to hear about next?! 1. My first code blue. 2. My first sit-down with my supervisor. 3. My biggest blessing as a new grad. . . Leave a 1️⃣, 2️⃣, or 3️⃣ !! Hit me up with any questions you have! XO -Kat
