Following on from @doctor.g_ epic #healthyself podcast episode #ditchdairy, here are some great alternatives. The commonest question I get asked when switching from dairy is on #calcium so read for more info. .
I normally make #nutmilk at home, it’s cheaper and healthier (pop to my stories to see me make sprouted almond milk)
.
Home made also usually has a higher nut content per ml, ie more nutritious. (Some of the commercial brands use very little nuts, as little as 2% ♀️, and a lot of thickeners to make it look creamy ) .
One thing to be aware of is that home-made nut milk is NOT fortified with calcium and vitamin D and so will not boast the calcium content some of the store brands do (not all are fortified) .
.
This is not necessarily a bad thing, since fortification of store bought plant milks can be done with low quality vitamins and calcium eg vitamin D2 instead of D3) - so think of it more like a low quality supplement being dissolved in diluted nut water , rather than real food nutrients. The numbers may look good on the carton, but does it translate to benefit in your body? ♀️
.
.
Ideally, it’s best to to get your calcium from food sources, some of the best include: collard greens, bak Choi, broccoli, soy, tahini, Navy beans ... but if you struggle to hit the RDA then you may wish to discuss a good quality supplement with your dietician or physician because it IS important to ensure your diet contains enough calcium. .
.
soy milk - this is most nutritionally similar to cows milk (in terms of protein/fat content) and a great dairy free alternative for kids if they are not soy intolerant (just make sure the soy is organic)
.
.
cashew milk - a fav in my matchalatte - it is so easy, just soak 1c cashew overnight then use a high sped blender to blend it up with 3-4 c water (I like it thick so I use 3), no straining needed it’s nice and creamy without much pulp. .
.
hemp milk- great alternative to soy - high quality & complete protein and also contains omega3&6 (great for brain and eye health
.
.
almond milk - provides some calcium even if not fortified, good source of Vitamin E .

Did you know that you can make milk out of practically any nut? Almonds, cashews, macadamia nuts, and peanuts are some of the most common varieties used, but you can get more experimental with Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, or even oats.
Just follow this instructions: 1. Buy raw nuts.
2. Soak the nuts overnight.
3. Drain and rinse the soaked nuts.
4. Blend the nuts with fresh water.
5. Strain the nut milk.
6. Sweeten, if desired.
7. Chill, drink, enjoy.
8. Wash, rinse, repeat once a week for nut milk happiness

Have you tried making your own almond milk in the juicer
You'll never want to go back to store bought ❤
Here's the recipe if you've never tried it:
1 cup of raw almonds
1 cup of raw pecans
4 pitted medjool dates
1 inch of vanilla bean
Himalayan salt, to taste
4-5 cups of water
Soak nuts overnight, then pour off the soak water. Add 4-5 cups of purified water to the nuts, add dates, salt and vanilla bean.
Making sure to have both nuts and water together, run this through a slow juicer (centrifugal will not work)
Then you can run the pulp through the juicer a second time with 2 more cups of water, if you'd like.
This makes about 2 quarts, and you can store ahead for about 3 days.
I refrigerate in mason jars filled to the top.
This juicer is the Omega VSJ square model juicer, and it makes the smoothest almond milk - everyone tells me it's the best they've ever had!! ❤
Cheers to a very happy Monday!! #juicingwithtracee #juicing #juiceon #raw #fresh #almondmilk #almonds #almondpecan #nutmilk #homemadealmondmilk #homemade #nutmilk #healthy #healthylifestyle #delicious #weightloss #delish #detox #healthyfats #omegajuicing
