The maiden stared out of the tower window, her pallid eyes scanning the courtyard below for the arrival of those who would be her undoing. Where once a heavy feeling of dread had weighed on her heart, now a solemn sense of peace washed over her being, as she resigned herself to deep reflection and prayer. How odd, that in little more than a moment, a life can sever from its physical form and seemingly cease to be... Regardless as to whether she moved on to a new world once she was no longer bound to this one by her mortal ties, she hoped that the strength of her spirit would be carried on in the heart’s of those who still cared for her, or at least in the thoughts of those who would either pity, despise or admire her. ————————————————————————- I have always been fascinated by female historical figures, particularly those who are portrayed by history in a certain light. Lady Jane Grey, commonly known as the “Nine Days Queen” was the Queen Of England and Ireland for just over a week before she was captured and held in the Tower of London, eventually being executed for high treason along with her husband in 1554. Her story is one of such solemnity and I wanted to write a short piece which portrays her thoughts in the last moments to accompany this very stark capture.
