On HWY 23 from Pipestone used to be my favorite stretch of road in the state, until those wind turbines littered the landscape. For some reason, all had been removed, and just hoping it was for beautification of this scenic stretch of road. Upper right is a remnant of a disassembled unit. Pipestone County Courthouse is a Beaux-Art beauty taking every advantage of the local Sioux Quartzite. Completed in 1901, and sitting on a rising, but large square. Like many in the region, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (see ref. no. 80002121). Quartzsiter Days 2019 was a test of trials, with SUPER hot over 100 degree heat for the #classiccar #cruisein on Friday and a “hurricane” of thunderstorms on Saturday morning- but luckily it cleared up and we could still host the #quartzsiter05k “race” for beer and donuts! We almost had a keg malfunction and the rain delay meant we were behind for setup, but luckily our laid back “athletes” stuck with us and we only had a 15 minute delay waiting for a new keg tap! We had a great time and these two underachieving superheroes won the costume contest with their Quartzsiter mascot themed costumes! We served @take16beer that #stonewallbar got for us, which was a big hit, and of course the awesome donuts from Edgerton bakery. Split Rock Creek State Park surprised me- it consists of this beautiful lake where you can rent kayaks, swim, fish and enjoy the excellent weather. I don't think of big beautiful lakes when I think of south western Minnesota so was surprised at how big and beautiful Split Rock Lake was when we arrived. On the day that my Uncle Deputy Derek Wellnitz was laid to rest I made my way across North and South Dakota. It was an odd kinda day. I saw more squad cars this time then I ever have in my countless trips to the hills. I bet there was 25-30. State, county and city cars. I swear it was every third squad car had their lights on and were cruising. After watching seeing the first couple, it made me think of all the fun times I had riding with him. Then every car I passed after that it made me think of all the different memories I have. Some of my most fun, crazy, exciting and scariest moments in my life started with him and all his difficult squad cars. I had a trooper pass me like I was standing still and I remembered the time that we went the fastest I've ever gone in my life in a car.....we hit 152! Yep you read that right 152 mph!! I end of the county to the next in a snap of a finger. Half the time he was driving with his knee! Lol. Never once was I ever scared when I was around him and at that speed it was no different. First thing he said to me when he got back I the car was.....hmmmm I wonder if we could have gone faster! Yep that was my uncle. The same guy that I always got mad at when I was younger cuz he never wore a vest....but by god if I was with him he always had it in reaching distance for me if I ever needed it. I lost count on how many hours I spent with him in a squad car. But I tell you what some of the best times of my life. On a day that my Uncle goes 10-7 for the last time, it just makes me wonder why/how. Bubba your watch is over and it's time to pass it over to all the others. This weekend we prepped for next weekend’s #quartzsiterdays2019 celebration by grinding out stumps and planting some new red maples to replace the dead trees.
