⁣ If you're experiencing post-traumatic symptoms, know that what is happening to you is a normal response to an overwhelming experience. Trauma leads to impaired integration in the brain, and symptoms like hypervigilance, mental images from the event(s), and sensory or emotional flashbacks are your brain's way of attempting to integrate what's happened. There's nothing "wrong" with you. You are not "broken". You have sustained a psychophysiological injury. And injuries can heal. ⁣ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ What is the key to healing from traumatic injury? Integration! Dr. Dan Siegel recently said that the purpose of trauma therapy is to create greater integration in the brain. What does that look like? It happens in two ways: 1) horizontally by uniting the right and left hemispheres, such as through the bilateral stimulation of EMDR, and 2) vertically by unifying the primitive, emotional and thinking parts of the brain. Vertical integration is accomplished by bringing mindful awareness to one's sensory and emotional experience while allowing the body to complete appropriate actions, including incomplete self-protection responses of fight or flight that were thwarted at the time of the traumatic event. IMHO, vertical integration can only happen with somatic psychotherapies that work on all levels of the brain, body, and nervous system simultaneously. ⁣ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ To all of you who are in a process of post-traumatic healing, I see you. Remember, you can heal from trauma!
