Reposting for the second time (was deleted earlier )I will never beg anyone to stay in my life again. I will never stay up all night crying over a man. Begging a man to love me, pleading with a man to want me. This isn't to shame those who are still in this place, because believe me I spent more than my fair share in this hell. So I want to tell you as someone who has lived this...stop. A real man will never and I mean never put you through this. I am happily remarried. This isn't about luck either. Falling in love, getting remarried after being in a abusive relationship/marriage is risky. It requires that you do a lot of shadow work, soul searching and healing on a deep level so that you don't end up with another abuser. It requires taking a calculated risk of faith in someone. Being vulnerable in a smart way, keeping healthy boundaries. What I have learned from being in a healthy marriage is that a man who loves you even during hard times still treats you with kindness, respect and love. Yes with love. It is hard work to crawl out of hell, but trust me it is harder to live in hell. Nothing will kill you faster than sharing your soul with the devil. You deserve to be loved, in the light. Trauma is about our survival responses. It is about the brain’s perception of SAFETY vs DANGER. It is NOT about our logical brain, our opinions, or what we think “should” or “shouldn’t” be traumatic. I’ve heard versions of all of the following: 1. I can’t have trauma. It wasn’t severe enough to be called that. 2. Other people have it so much worse than I do. 3. It’s not like he/she/they hit me. 4. It’s dumb for that to upset me. 5. That shouldn’t bother me. 6. I don’t have trauma. What happened to me wasn’t that bad. When our brain does not feel safe, it engages in the survival responses - fight, flight, freeze, and fawn. Survival physiology is part of the autonomic nervous system, NOT the logical, rational, reasonable, thinking part of the brain. Trauma is part of the experience of being human. We’ve all had it to some extent. Not everyone who experiences trauma will have symptoms of PTSD, CPTSD, or other “disorders,” but everyone who has a pulse has had trauma at one point or another. Trauma is not defined by how “severe” or “bad” something is. Trauma can be caused by ANYTHING - even good things. I love the definition by Judy Crane of The Refuge - A Healing Place. We use the word “trigger” to describe the sensory information in the external world that stimulates our amygdala (emotion center of brain) to tell us when we need to prepare to mobilize aka fight/flight. . I think people will naturally experience triggers throughout our lifetime and i want to normalize this. I believe what is important is that once our bodies send a signal of tension that we soothe ourselves and self regulate to bring ourselves back to a grounded sense of self. . The goal is reciprocal inhibition. That’s a psycho-babble way of saying - that you become so fluent in your body’s language that when you pair your triggers with a relaxed body- you will rule your inner world. . I also think it would be helpful to check in with yourself and get to know the different parts of yourself that show up during triggers. I’ll do a video soon on this- an understanding of the different parts of you that make your inner world is key to offering yourself more compassion. Parts that show up during triggers can be- protector parts, inner critics, fearful parts, fighter parts, etc. . Your body and inner world hold so much richness and healing waiting for you to explore and embody. Lean into it!
