• • New ⭐️ I wanted to wait to post this until I had the full collection of the Queen Record Store Day 2019 releases and I finally got my hands on them all! (apart from the Holy Man single that Roger and Brian were involved with, not really interested in that one oops hehe) So I did actually take part in this years Record Store Day and I queued up for over THREE HOURS in the hopes of getting all of the Queen ones but unfortunately, both Bohemian Rhapsody records sold out before I could get them, but I DID manage to leave with Brian’s new solo single on 12”, New Horizons, I actually love the song and the artwork so knew I had to get this one, and for only £6.99 too?! The other two, I had to battle on eBay for as I wanna say like 80% of the people who did manage to buy them, only bought them to benefit their own pocket and to resell on eBay, I hate those people anyway, I did end up having to overspend on the other two but actually not as much as I thought I would! But I did manage to get both and I’m so so happy I did, I was desperate to get my hands on them and add them into my collection as I think they look beautiful! In 68 minutes #PaulWeller gives us 21 songs and nearly just as many musical styles. It's all pop music, but it also has influences from folk, punk, soul, country, classical music, jazz. Weller's own Something/anything, Goodbye yellow brick road or Imperial bedroom? His songwriting isn't strong enough to bring this album in the same league, but it's certainly similar in approach and sound. The record goes from heavily orchestrated Bacharach pop music with "Empty ring", the folk influenced pop of "22 dreams", "Invisible" is a soul ballad with just piano, "Song for Alice" is a nice jazz influenced instrumental, the country influences of "Why walk when you can run", Weller's also not afraid of combining a marimba with loud guitars in "Push it along". And why not combine horns with loud guitars as well on the 1 minute interlude "A dream reprise". The strangest of all is Weller doing latin music on "One bright star". The album gets a little less interesting towards the end when the quality of the songs drops a bit and when all the style changes don't come as a surprise anymore. But overall this is a surprisingly strong album from an artist who is still trying new things 30 years into his career. Ambitious and not always brilliant, but with enough strong material to make this an album that should be in every well rounded record collection. #saintvitus are back with the first full length album since 2012.... This is classic Vitus every step of the way and I really could not have hoped for a better effort this late in the game. Just where it will sit in the band's canon of releases, I'm not sure, particularly as the sound/production and mix is so good that it is hard to compare to earlier albums as it is just so pleasing to the ear. In fact, I only have one non-round record, which is the Modest Mouse #RSD2019 release “Poison the Well”. This is almost like the ninja throwing star of records. Actually, a throwing star shaped record would be really cool. Anyone wanna collaborate with me on that? Where was I? Oh yeah, “Poison the Well.” Great song + wild cover art + mint green pressing x triangle, then carry the 1, and you get the Most Unique record in my collection⁣
