Another race to end the month. It’s been almost a year since I got into OCR and I’m still loving it. Completely had no decent training in for this race and was not just feeling it along the course, but a Spartan never ever quits so i just kept on going. Words by Simon Adriano | Every once in a while an experience comes along that makes you want to forget about everything else and change your perspective in life. This is Jerald. He’s 16 years old and visually impaired. He has climbed five mountains. Did wall climbing and is an avid photographer (You read that right.) When I was his age, I was slacking off and paying attention to a lot of nonsense. I took things for granted and was pretty much aimless. But this kid has a different vision. He was not chasing an average triumph over adversity story. He wants to take pleasure in everything he does in life and is willingly sharing it with others. Joining the Spartan Race was a quick but gripping adventure for Jerald and for our team. Everyone knew he’d go for it. There was no trace of doubt whether he could press on with the “obstacles.” (He paid burpees for the rope climb and spear throw.) He ran the 6km trail, went over walls, hurdles (and the rest), scaled the fire jump obstacle, crossed the finish line and brought tears in everyone’s eyes. The experience taught us a lot of things. Not just about breaking boundaries or determination. It’s about how we experience not what we experience. What value it brought to ourselves and to others. It taught us that prejudice prevents things to blossom. That we need to stop limitation to ourselves and to others. More importantly, that we need to instill value or merit little things or episodes that occur. Trust played a good role in this little adventure we had. If it wasn’t for the people who helped Jerald, he would lack eyes or motivation. If it wasn’t for Jerald, we would’ve been reckless in sorts. Parenting also comes into play. How brave and supportive of them to take their kids outdoors and experience all sorts of lessons, adventure, danger and beauty. Taught us a lot about faith and relationships. It was fruitful. We had a good time. P.S. We are thankful for those we met during the race - Those who cheered for him, talked to him, shook his hands and even offered a hand with the obstacles. Thank you Spartan Race Philippines, marshals and volunteers for the warm reception. It was indeed epic #SpartanRacePh #SpartanPh
