I did it Malt Mates! First in-line for TWO HOURS, in the rain, in the snow and in the wind for the #SpiritofSpeyside #WhiskyFestival exclusive bottle of #Glenfiddich ! . A huge shoutout to the lovely folk @glenfiddichdistillerygiftshop who saw me freezing and promptly opened the doors for me to wait inside, dry and warm. The small gestures that win people over!! . Also a huge thanks to the incredible @singlemaltmark, for always being so attentive and sarcastic. He saw my posts and got an umbrella ready for me but he was beaten by the rain on Wednesday, coz I already had one . Always nice chatting with you mate! I appreciate the kind words exchanged! . As for the whisky, a lovely outturn of 400 bottles, 58.5% ABV port pipe matured 15yo whisky! . Now me and @thegrumpybull are meeting for a @murraymcdavid Coleburn Warehouse tour in #Elgin and a @rbwhiskymaker Dr. Rachel Barrie @BenRiach cask strength tasting! A lot to be learned today!!! . One of the special things about having worked for #williamgrantandsons for as long I have, is that I have received some unique bottlings. . This is The Hazelwood 110 which celebrates the 110th Birthday of Janet Sheed Roberts. "Wee Jannie" as she was known, lived in Hazelwood House close to both Glenfiddich and Balvenie and at the time of her 110th Birthday was Scotland's oldest woman. My memory of her was that at the time of the annual Pensioners Lunch she would come to the shop, take my arm and we would walk round and I would tell her all that was new. She also opened The Glenfiddich Distillery Visitors Centre in 1969, 50 years ago. So this bottle holds a very special place in my small collection. . It is a blend of malts from the Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Kininvie and Ailsa Bay distilleries and grain from the Girvan distillery. . NOSE: Beautifully rich aromas of oak and deep vanilla perfectly complement a sweet and fresh fruitiness. Adding a little water brings out distinct layers of biscuity maltiness, oak tannins and woody spice notes. . TASTE: Velvety smooth with a luxurious mouth feel and soft vanilla oak flavour. With a splash of water, the complexity of the blend is revealed, delivering a warm cinnamon and nutmeg spiciness, zesty citrus notes and the sweetness of caramelised fruits. . FINISH: Very long and lingering with a sweetness that goes on and on. It was a fantastic Easter holiday weekend in the North East corner of Scotland, with almost Mediterranean temperatures. Blue seas, blue sky and Glenfiddich IPA. It doesn't get much better than that. In the first experiment of it’s kind, Malt Master Brian Kinsman collaborated with Seb Jones, an entrepreneurial Speyside brewer, to create a new craft IPA and pioneer the way for a new kind of single malt scotch whisky. Brewed in bespoke craft IPA barrels, this expression is imbued with unique zesty citrus notes of ripe green apple, William’s pear and spring blossom.
