SHAPE & COLOUR MATCH | Incorporating gross motor into our activities never fail to get Claire really excited! This was definitely one of those low prep but maximum engagement activities! We played this activity twice, each lasting around 10mins because she spent a long time deliberating which shape/colour she wanted to choose next! ♀️ .
To prep this activity, I cut out 4 shapes from 5 different coloured paper (to save time, stack the coloured paper together each time you cut one shape) and stuck corresponding shapes/colours on plastic cups. Claire’s task was to match the cup to its corresponding coloured shape! This was great in helping with visual discrimination of two properties - colour and shape. Claire was involved from start to end as I got her to help me prep for this activity, sticking the shapes onto the cups (if she could cut well with the scissors, I would have let her cut the shapes herself too )! In the process, we revised shapes and colours in both English & Chinese! #bpb_cognitive

Ice pom-pom fun
We love ice play, especially on such a warm day and this kept little A busy for almost an hour!
She loved transferring the ice into her coloured bowls matching as she went.
I gave her tongs and cups to use, she was great at using the tongs but preferred using her hands, filling all the bowls one by one and tipping them back out listening to the sounds the ice made on the metal tray.

TASTE SAFE DIGGER PLAY TRAY
.
I’m often asked for sensory play ideas that are safe for older babies and toddlers who still like to taste everything. .
⭐️
.
I have a whole collection of taste safe activities over on the blog including this digger play tray that’s made using oats and shredded wheat as a sensory base filler!
.
⭐️
.
The more they play with tactile materials the more they get used to the experience and tend to try things on their mouths less.
.
⭐️
.
This was ana absolute hit with mine from about 12 months plus and is still hugely popular with my 4 year old now. .
⭐️
.
Scooping, digging, transporting, building towers with the shredded wheat, filling and emptying, re-telling digger stories and imaginative play. .

This week’s @manywaystoplay prompt is all about muffin tins. Continuing on from our egg hiding activity this week, I decided to make a “lift the flap” style game. I turned the tray upside down and stuck magnetic animals on each spot and covered them with a cupcake liner. M then came along and started lifting off the liners to reveal and name the animal underneath. This was a great activity to work on oral language skills and could be modified in many ways:
***
For babies: this could work as it is or you could change the cupcake liners to an object that might be easier for your little one to handle (post-it-notes/ fabric etc)
**
For toddlers: elaborate on oral language task (eg: yes it’s a fish, what colour is the fish? where does a fish live?)
**
Preschoolers/Lower Primary: place two images underneath so a memory game could be played (use a 6 hole tin to simplify this task)
**
Lower primary: write sight words on each spot with white board maker and have your child read the word as they reveal
***
Check out my stories to see some of these ideas in action.

⭐️Rotation Day ⭐️
I've just swapped the toys on our activity shelves. Here's a look at what we'll be playing with this week. They fall into 8 categories...
1. Literacy: name puzzles and lowercase magnetic tracing board (Magnatab)
2. Dramatic play: doctor case
3. Fine motor: threading bobbins and stacking rings
4. Shapes (an area of particular interest for us lately): Felt shapes for the easel
5. Construction: magnetic shape tiles
6. Thinking games: occupations puzzle and magnetic bugs puzzle
7. Music: xylophones (honestly, the Kmart one is really dodgy but putting the two out stops fights - we need an upgrade!) 8. Numeracy: Number puzzle and peg dolls for sequencing
.
These activities are aimed at children aged 4 and 2 and include a variety of skills. If you view my 'toy rotation' story highlight you can see more about how I organise these resources.
They are displayed on open shelves for the children to play with independently. I put them in baskets and trays rather than boxes to make them visible and easily accessible.
Adult interaction always makes playing with our activities a much richer experience but the children can help themselves to these shelves at any time.
The shelves are rotated every 1-2 weeks depending on the children's interest levels.
We also have other toy areas within the play room such as a small world bench, craft trolley and easel, sensory table and dramatic play area.
If I know where an item is from I have tagged the shop. Some of these activities were gifts, op shop finds or from stores that were closing down so I'm unable to tell you where to find them, sorry!
Feel free to comment or message me if you have an questions
