VOCAL HEALTH Vocal Hemorrhage . The vocal folds (also known as the vocal cords) are located inside the larynx. They are made up of muscle, ligament and a special epithelial layer (tissue covering) which is the delicate outside lining of the vocal folds. The vocal folds vibrate at extremely high speeds of several hundred times per second when singing which means they can be easily stressed. . In order to produce sound, air travels through the vocal folds, sucks them together and they begin to vibrate. The vibrations that originate from the vocal folds are then amplified within the spaces above it (the vocal tract). When the vocal folds are brought together with extreme force, it can cause hemorrhaging in the vocal folds. . A Vocal Hemorrhage is blood that has leaked into the vocal folds from a ruptured blood vessel which leaves a bruise under the surface of the vocal folds. Some of the main causes of hemorrhaging in the vocal folds are; singing aggressively, screaming, shouting, singing with poor technique, singing in bad environments, throat clearing and coughing. Like Polyp’s, hemorrhaging in the vocal folds can happen as a result of a single episode of vocal trauma. . Some of the major signs to listen out for are: . #avanTIPS 6: Sing through a straw (can anyone guess the song) I know I look (and sound) a little crazy doing this, but it is SO GOOD FOR YOUR VOICE!!! Here’s why: It “occludes” (partially closes) the vocal tract, creating -less pressure on the vocal folds -more acoustic vibration -breath control -pitch control (as you can hear, it makes me a bit pitchy which is great for practicing)!!!!! You can check if you’re doing it correctly by using your hand like I did!!!!! Hello Singers, Enjoy one of my advanced students @winiemusic as she emphasizes the importance of a flaccid jaw for good articulation. TIP FOR THE WEEK Milk creates and leaves a thick layer of phlegm on your vocal colds,and eventually make you sound less than expected. Don't get me wrong,milk is good nutrition but as a singer who is always on the milk stand/on stage or in the studio, milk is not the friendliest liquid you can absorb, it won't damage your vocal cords but gradually its residue will leave a hitch in your flow. When ever you have the urge to take dairy, always gargle with warm water with a slice of lemon. Most of us forget that our tongue even exists, but it is constantly working for us ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Having an overactive tongue can cause unnecessary tension and prevent a singer from navigating certain ranges of the voice comfortably/properly. All of our singing muscles are connected in some way, so tongue tension can easily turn into head, neck, and larynx tension. Because the larynx where the vocal cords are housed, this tension can inhibit proper vocal cord vibration. Who would've known your tongue could do that!? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Place your thumb behind your chin on the soft tissue under your jaw. Now move your tongue around: forward, backward, up, down, and around your mouth. Do you feel that squishy spot hardening? Those are some of your extrinsic tongue muscles contracting! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now try singing a phrase or two while pressing on that spot. A little bit of firmness is normal because our tongue needs to move around to form words, but does yours feel like it is fighting against your thumb? If so, you (like many others) may have a little bit of tongue tension! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Not to worry, though! There are lots of ways to combat tension ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Start this week by having an awareness of your tongue and feeling those muscles every once in a while (you can even massage them gently!).
