July is National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness and Prevention Month. If you’ve followed me through my pregnancy, you know I was very open about my anxiety and fears that surrounded the news we got at our 20 week ultrasound. They told us that our sweet little man would have a cleft lip, but couldn’t tell us much more. We did an amniocentesis exam to rule out any other genetic disorders that sometimes accompany a cleft, but had no clue how severe the lip would be, and if it would also affect his nose, gums, palate, etc. I was really scared guys. I was scared of the unknown. I would cry every time I thought of my little man being put under anesthesia and having his face operated on. I was scared that kids would tease him for his face being different or his voice sounding unlike theirs. I was scared we would have feeding issues, and ear tubes. Mostly, I was scared there would be nothing we could do to comfort him while he dealt with everything. Everyone would say, “Modern medicine is amazing! You won’t even be able to tell” and honestly, that’s not what my worry was about. . We were very relieved to see that his lip wasn’t too bad when he arrived. Not relieved by the way he looked, but because it meant less surgeries. He would have been perfect in our eyes, no matter how severe. It does affect his palate, but again, it could have been worse. We’ve got lots of appointments with specialists and different doctors ahead of us, but we are very lucky to have the UMs amazing teams so close. I’m already dreading his first surgery because I’ve absolutely fallen in love with his sweet wide smile and can’t imagine him without it. Thanks to everyone that helped to set our mind at ease and offered support along the way. Now that he’s here, I know everything will be fine and that we are in good hands. . This little cutie tested my patience yesterday (so did Daddy ). #RealTalk #nothingisperfect ⁣⁣ ⁣ Being a parent is not easy, especially when you work from home, on top of managing your home and family. It can wear you thin.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Believe it or not, I actually do have bad days! And sometimes I drop a ball or two while trying to juggle it all. Help and communication (especially communication) from my partner is key. When that isn’t up to par, and your toddler decides to throw a long and needy tantrum that pretty much derails an hour+ of your work day (and shower time) it can be soul-gutting ... especially while PMSing.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I feel horrible for legit yelling at my child. A few hours after, during her nap, I broke down with a good cry. The #MomGuilt is real.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I think I’ve only been this mad at her one other time.
