WHALE AID-RUSSIA Our team landed in Moscow yesterday evening and met today with government officials and scientists at the Ministry of the Environment & Natural Resources, followed by a joint press conference. Tomorrow, they’ll be heading to Srednyaya Bay (near Vladivostok on Russia’s Far East coast), where the 10 orcas and 87 beluga whales are languishing in icy waters. And when we’ve completed the visit, the team will work together to submit a report to the government, advising them on restoring the whales to health so they can be returned to the open oceans. We have set up a special fund to meet the costs of this initial visit, since we are bringing in people from around the world who are experts on marine mammal rescue, rehab and release. We have yet to raise a further $25,000 to cover these costs. Everything to do with animal abuse, neglect, captivity and hunting really really pisses me off. But my heart holds an extreme amount of passion for Orcas. Not only did I grow up at the backdoor of @seaworldorlando & now I am lucky enough to call the #sanjuanislands a home. (Home to the #southernresidentkillerwhales ) I hate to admit now I had a season pass my entire teenage life & some of my early adult life. When I had children I took them about every weekend. We visited the park because we LOVED animals, we loved marine life & we loved #tilikum We along with everyone else today that visited did not know just how wrong this was. I now have been fully aware for the last 10 yrs & thanks to the movie #blackfish many others are. These animals DO NOT deserve this life. They are highly intelligent creatures who can travel up to 100 miles a day. They are family oriented beings, they communicate with one another using their own specific dialect & echolocation to talk & hunt, they love & mourn loss, & their only enemy is MAN. The life of an orca in captivity is unconditional suffering. - You can see Kalia here @seaworldsandiego I am not sure if she is bored or her natural instincts want to be stimulated, clearly her life is unfulfilling. I am not an orca expert but I do have common sense & compassion! It’s not hard to miss what’s going on here. - It’s also sad to me to hear the people encouraging & cheering her on. Excellent news - for those of you following the “Whale Jail” situation in Russia, a team of experts brought together by @whalesanctuaryproject has received a formal invitation to visit the whales, assess their health and come up with a plan. These young whales (10 orcas and 87 belugas) were captured to be sold to marine parks in China. Fortunately, the captors’ malpractices were discovered and thanks to the help of many, including celebrities, Russia has ordered that the whales must be released. The whales, however, must first be brought back to health and rehabilitated. As with any large undertaking, funds must be raised.
