•Applying to Grad School w a Low GPA• ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One of the most frequent Q's I get asked is how I applied to my Masters programs with a sub 3.0 GPA. So, here's a dedicated post to what I did: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1️⃣ I applied. Don't let the minimum GPA requirements listed on the programs' sites deter you from applying. If you're close to a 3.0 (minimum for most of the programs I applied to) then go for it. You never know. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2️⃣ Gather strong LORs. I didn't have a good connection with really any of my undergrad science professors, but I had taken multiple courses with one and improved each semester with her. So, I approached her to explain the situation and what I needed from her. She happily agreed to write me a letter explaining my improvement and capability as a student. I also got letters from my research PI, and from some non science profs. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3️⃣ As with any app, write well. Write strategically per program app. Good writing can carry you far. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4️⃣ I applied to a range of programs including both PB and MS. I emailed and called most of the program admission's offices just to get my name in their mind. I was only accepted to one but that's ALL it takes. The acceptance was probationary meaning I had to finish the prereqs for it and get a certain GPA my first sems to stay in it, but it was still a seat in a program. It was my second chance. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 5️⃣ I did not take the GRE so this limited my options. If you take the exam, you will be able to apply to a much broader range of programs some with linkages. Also, some programs accept MCAT in lieu of GRE (I didn't have either so could only apply to a very small batch of programs). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 6️⃣ MPH app was way easier bc I already had the MS grad GPA supporting me. I applied to 2 accelerated MPH programs and was talking to admission reps at both schools throughout the entire process. The programs are small so I knew being a squeaky wheel would take me far. I was accepted to both, again without the GRE. Good writing, strategy, and LORs were imperative, as always. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ SO, take the leap and apply to the programs after putting together a great app! You never know ‍♀️

Or always have something to say about your every move? Let them know you are an independent thinker. AND ❣️ 2)Don’t OVERSHARE. People can only talk about what you have told them. Today’s #TechniqueTuesday is the basics of Fluorescent Activated Cell Sorting or FACS and Flow Cytometry. . . FACS or what people often call flow cytometry is a technique that allows us to sort cells based on specific parameters. These include cell size or morphology or protein expression. . . A FACS sorter has a collection process and can sort your cells and put them into different wells based on their differences (like GFP expression for example) whereas flow cytometry analyzers don’t collect the cells - they simply analyze them as the name suggests. . . This technique is used by a wide range of people for varying experiments. Some people want to study the morphology of their cells, others want to see if a protein is present in the cell, some want to see if their cells have died, and like I mentioned earlier, counting and sorting are often needed to sort out populations of cell types from a mixture. Like pulling out the various ingredients from a fruit salad. . . Swipe to see a schematic! Depending on what you wish to measure or sort, the user changes the parameters of the analysis or sort to suit their needs. In the lab I often want to measure the expression of receptors on the surface of my cells, so we use an antibody conjugated to a fluorophore and use a specific laser to see what population of our cells express the receptor and at what level! . Where you see me posting pictures with my degrees, I see the years of hard work and dedication that went into achieving those piece of paper. The late nights, the exams, the study, the practice and the stress! . . Where you see pictures of my organized planner, I see many years of trial and error to find out what works for me and then time each week planning everything out meticulously. . . Where you see me finishing up my PhD, I see the almost 10 years of higher education and hard years to get to this stage. . . Where you see pictures of an experiment I did in the lab that worked, I see how many times that experiment failed before I got it working and optimized. . . Where you see pages and pages of pretty notes, I see the hours I spent combing through the learning materials committing it to memory. The long days I put into all my university work, persevering even when I didn’t achieve what I would have liked. . . Where you see high grades and good results, I see the failures I had and the resistance from people when getting back into it. . . Where you see good work life balance, I see years of overworking myself and burn out before learning how to manage my time effectively. . . . ANY TIME you look at my Instagram feed and think wow I wish I could do that, know that YOU CAN! I am just like anybody else, but spent my time working hard, overcoming failures, getting back up and trying again and again and again! . . Don’t forget that behind everything you see on Instagram is a bigger picture. Don’t waste your time stressing about what somebody else has that you don’t, instead focus your energy on being the best you can be and working towards that goal.

Don’t let others shame you into thinking that a decision that you made to protect your health and sanity is a bad one. Getting out of toxic situations should be viewed as badges of honor not patches of disgrace. ✊ In case no one has told you: 1) You are so brave for leaving that job that cared more about its revenue than your health and well-being. . 2) I am proud of you for realizing that you deserved more than that one-sided marriage. . 3) I admire your parenting skills and how you beautifully raise your children without the support you always deserve. . 4) I think it’s dope that you are single because you know you aren’t about to settle for anything less .
