This bucket of beauty has a lot of steps: lay dirt, drip lines, burn holes in landscape fabric. Buy corms and plant last fall in row. Watch and worry as gophers eat them. Replant corms, amend soil, wait, drink tea and make a mosaic. Try to remember to spray with oil before the bloom. Pick each stem. Wash aphids off each stem. Did a little EGGSperiment yesterday with "natural" dyes. I thought they came out pretty darn cool. ⁣ ⁣ If you choose this route I'd recommend you plan ahead though. I feed my goats alfalfa. . Wait, no. Let me rephrase that. . I feed my bucks alfalfa. . . whaaaattttt!!!!! . . Yup. Hay, grain, and alfalfa for all of the goats. ESPECIALLY when they aren’t out on pasture. . . So let me clarify. . First, each goat needs about two to four pounds of hay per day (3-4% of body weight in pounds), which can be fed free choice or twice a day. Okay, not too hard, right? For us, we go through about one 50lb bale, of *nutritionally analyzed 1st and 2nd cutting hay*, per every 10-15 goats, depending on the weather, time of year, and most importantly, the individual goat itself (ie. it’s needs). . . Next, grain. . . I hear SO many people say “oh, never feed grain to a buck, especially not to a wether!” And I’ll admit, I used to think similarly. Here’s the thing. Too much of anything can cause problems, that’s just how it is. So when you hear wethers and grain in the same sentence, your first thought should be Urinary Calculi. Or bloat. But generally, UC. It’s not the grain itself. It’s the content OF the grain and the amount fed that makes the difference! . . . And by content, I mean our good friends, Calcium and Phosphorus. And with those two buddies it’s allll about the ratio, baby. Goats require a 1:1 - 2:1 ratio of calcium:phosphorus. Alfalfa = high in calcium. Grain = generally high in phosphorus (depending on the type). . . . My point, my friends, know your animals needs. Know your feed. Know your hay. Know. Your. Goat. . . .
