Are you happy? Pratipaksha bhavanam is a concept mentioned in Patanjali's yoga sutras (2.33): "vitarka badhane pratipaksha bhavanam" Roughly translated as "when deviant/negative thoughts arise, cultivate an opposite attitude" A lot of us are not happy with how we look. We think we're too big, too small, too whatever. There was a class I attended in which the instructor had everyone repeatedly yell, "I love my belly, I love my butt!" It was funny and fun and incorporated this very core concept of being able to find mental and emotional balance through pratipaksha bhavanam. Prati+paksha sort of translates to opposite+side. Bhavanam is an attitude, a stance, an affect based on an attitude. Together in this context, pratipaksha bhavanam is the opposite attitude to that which is not beneficial, those thoughts or emotions. Now I'm not a fan of the whole just-be-positive stance. I don't believe we can always be positive in the face of negativity. But just the exercise of framing an opposite thought in your mind (whether you believe it or not) might shift your perspective. Yoga is never about judging, not yourself, not me, not your best friend, no one. And while it is admittedly very difficult to take yoga beyond your mat, that's where true practice lies. Why do we practice yoga asana? ✧ According to the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali, there are eight limbs of yoga, and asana (yoga postures) is the third limb. It acts as a gateway into the physical body. When we calm the body, we’re able to calm the “the monkey mind” and sit still for meditation. Combining breath with proper alignment, we free our bodies from emotional blockages, clearing the energetic pathways for deep healing. ✧ When I first started yoga, I used to think that the purpose of asana was to solely achieve strength, flexibility and mobility. As my practice evolves, I now realize that the asana practice is about cultivating a deeper awareness and connection with my body, mind and spirit. How I feel on the mat mirrors how I feel off the mat. With each breath, I learn to let go and heal. I’d like to share a quote that I’ve read every day this week and it just keeps digging deeper and truer: “‘Finding yourself’ isn’t really how it works. You are not a ten-dollar bill in last winter’s coat pocket. You are also not lost. Your true self is right here, buried under cultural conditioning, other people’s opinions and inaccurate conclusions you made as a kid that became your beliefs about who you are. ‘Finding yourself’ is actually a returning to yourself. It’s an unlearning, an excavation, a remembering who you were before the world got its hands on you.” -Emily McDowell. As I get ready to teach on my first yoga retreat of the season this weekend, I find myself in awe of the places this practice has taken me, literally and figuratively - mentally and emotionally. And still, wherever I go there I am. Unraveling, excavating and becoming more of myself every single day. Meeting parts of me for the first time, and other parts that I know quite well by now. And finding honor, awe and gratitude for every last bit of it. This practice is so dang sweet.

You must travel into the depths of your darkness to find your light. Dark and light are two sides of the same coin. We must learn to embrace both. The path to your higher self is not about denying the existence of the ego and its workings, but accepting its presence so that you can learn how it works.
