Pierre Overnoy is a legendary figure in the natural wine world: a pioneer, especially in his avoidance of the use of sulphur, he stopped adding it since 1968. Pierre started his career at the family Domaine in Pupillin, Arbois with 2,5 hectares. Jules Chauvet, the Beaujolais négociant and wine researcher, was a mentor and a friend to Pierre #Overnoy since the beginning. Overnoy’s goal was always to make wines of terroir, which would reveal the key of their soils and accurately reflect their vintage. Since 2001 the vines and the cellar are now solely in the hands of Pierre Overnoy‘s protégé, Emmanuel Houillon, who carries on the philosophy and each painstaking detail of his mentor. Emmanuel worked with his wife Anne until his brother Aurélien joined them as a partner in 2007. Without sulphur the quality of the grapes has to be exceptional and so everything in the vineyard is done totally organically. Vintages from Overnoy’s era bear his name, while more recent vintages are named after #Houillon. These are living wines, each wine a soulful, rewarding experience. #overnoyhouillon

ℹ️ This wine is was tasted single blind with a theme of thin skinned red wines. This wine is Poulsard from the Arbois appellation in the Jura. This is old vines (Vieilles Vignes) sourced from 3 parcels from vines that are 45-90 years old. Hand harvested and vinified with native yeasts. Sans Soufre is a French for "without Sulphur", which means no SO2 was added at any point in the Winemaking process·

Pale ruby color with a garnet rim·

Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of florals, rose, lavender, red currant, red cherry, cranberry, and “natty” funk·

The wine is dry, medium acidity, medium- chalky tannins, medium alcohol, and medium body. An initial spritz almost on the palate, possibly due to lack of sulphur. A fine powdery texture to the wine. A medium+ length finish of rose water, lavender, and red currant·

Key Features - A very pale color even for thin skinned red grapes. Poulsard, extremely cold climate Pinot Noir, or Nebbiolo are all possibilities. Natural wine could be anywhere, but it is much more common with Poulsard and Pinot Noir. Missing tannin and acid for Nebbiolo. The color is driving me to Poulsard, but it has a lot of structure for Poulsard so guessing some Trousseau was added. Final guess: 2016 Arbois Poulsard Trousseau blend from a high quality and natural wine producer in the Jura·

This wine is truly unique and special. After looking this up with the age of the vines this should increase the concentration significantly. That was the main reason I thought some Trousseau was blended in. This is a natural wine that simply just works. It has a funk, but it adds to the wine and doesn't dominate it. The florals and crunchy red fruit make the wine. A tremendous effort. Sadly this is made in miniscule quantities. Beautiful wine!·
