✨Raiders of the North Sea |❣️8/10 | 5 plays
My friend and I wrapped up our board games day with a game of Raiders—a lighter game but exactly what we needed after 2 intense games of Yokohama (absolutely obsessed with this game right now ). There was a little too much downtime in our previous 4p game, so our 1 hour 2p game felt just right.
We both maxed out on the armory track to help us raid, but I went for mostly Chieftain offerings this game, whereas my friend killed off a lot of her crew (like a true Viking ⚔️) to max out the Valkyrie track. This ended up winning her the tiebreaker after we both ended with a score of 88. Love how tight the scores always are at the end—I've never had a runaway leader problem with Raiders!
The base game really does become a little samey after a couple of plays, particularly without the expansion (which is what I played with when I first rated the game). The only source of variety is the crew members you recruit, but I still find the game very entertaining, thematic and streamlined, so it's still an 8/10 from me instead of 8.5.
Just came back from a weekend full of board games and friends! Who did you game with this weekend? Tag them down below and let us know what games you played!⠀

Lord of the Rings the card game by @fantasyflightgames ♀️♀️
One to two player co-op card game set within JRR Tolkien’s Middle Earth. It heavily uses materials from the books and expanded lore rather than the films.
You put together a deck of cards including heroes, equipment, allies and events. Once this is assembled you take on a three stage story mission. Requiring you to explore, complete quests and fight monsters.
The game has a notoriety for being tough and taking no prisoners.
I can see why, some cards and enemies can just wipe out your heroes remorselessly. I liked the mechanics of playing with a deck of cards and upgrading and playing special actions from the hand. However, I’m concerned by content overload. I don’t know what our inclination to building decks and buying more content will be. It feels almost daunting at this stage. Also the scenarios so far feel a bit paint by numbers. It was very rinse and repeat mechanics and I was hoping for a bit more engagement, in a two player game you are effectively playing as one large player. I wish there was a bit of uniqueness available for each player. I suppose the uniqueness will come from the deck building that could occur.
What I would love is a ccg/tcg style game that is a straight card drafting/ deck builder. So for example you have groupings of cards day 1-10. You can go out and collect content to your hearts content. When it comes to the game you draft and deck build from the groupings, meaning you don’t have to spend hours building a deck and working out combos, the game has done that for you. Just an idea - but the thought of spending £££ and time building perfect decks just doesn’t massively appeal to me anymore.
Here are #mytop9boardgames2019 A little late to the party, but I wanted to play Yokohama more before I put it in my top 3 (top 3 material confirmed ). I've only been playing board games since March 2018, so it'll be interesting to see how my list changes in the future!
I've played these games 3-14x except Teotihuacan (2x), and they all reflect what I love in a game. I'm strictly a Eurogamer—the sight of minis or player conflict gets me running for the hills I love point salads, and dice placement, asymmetry, card drafting, engine building and hand/resource management are my favourite mechanics. I hate deduction, dexterity and auctions/bidding, but I like everything else—deck-building, worker placement, you name it!
Based on my tastes, I have some idea of my future top 9 games. I just got Terraforming Mars, so that might be kicking Wingspan out soon Trajan is an instant buy and likely favourite for me once it's affordable , and so are Brass Birmingham and the new CoB.
Played this a couple of years ago and was a bit lukewarm on it. Played it tonight and it clicked. I LOVED it!! The timing of when to go for those awards is very tense, as it's really important to have presence there if you want to do well. The game is just one giant crescendo.
Stay tuned for a comparison to Underwater Cities on the next episode!!

We didn't make the @derbyonboardgames Monday night event tonight for various reasons. We did however manage to get Clank! to the table. We played using the Gold and Silk expansion for the first time. We used the 'Silk' side infiltrating the Queen Spiders lair to get her precious artifacts. Really enjoyed this expansion, it requires the use of swords to chop through the webs to get the loot and adds extra tokens that need either swords or boots to even walk past! The clank bag appeared to be very kind to us this game with neither of us nearly facing death. Both managed to escape and score the bonus 20 points. Final scores were an impressive 164-142.

We played #LeHavre again cause @tomdm.bg was curious about it. Well it didn’t work out that great for me. For some reasons I had to pay to many Francs to feed my workers and missed good buildings. But I like the complexity of this game. Great Rosenberg title for sure! (93-139-117-106)
