Our last book this week for #readalongplayalong_b is Ada Twist Scientist by Andrea Beaty and illustrated by David Roberts. This is a fun book to read aloud and we enjoyed following along with Ada’s journey to discover what was making the stinky smell. In this book Ada is full of questions, she wants to know everything about the world and how it works. For our bookish play I wrote down some question words and put some powder in a lid with some pipettes, trays, water and spoons. We then used all our senses to work out what the mystery powder was and used the question words to help develop our investigation. We discovered the powder was Strawberry milkshake mix . We couldn’t let #readalongplayalong B week go by without a book about Paddington Bear . We have a great collection of books about this loveable and charming bear written by Michael Bond and illustrated by R.W Alley but we chose Paddington the Artist for our book yesterday. We loved Paddington’s artistic creations so we decided to paint our own Paddington Bears and I think they all did a super job! Unicorn Wash We love reading Sophie Johnson Unicorn Expert by Morag Hood and Ella Okstad. So for our play today I set up a little unicorn washing station. Tiny had lots of fun giving her unicorn a pink raspberry bubble bath, complete with gems, unicorn cake sprinkles and bio glitter. We also had a bowl of pink water, spray bottles, pipettes, sponges and a brush. We think Sophie would be impressed with our Unicorn washing skills. SPIN PAINT BUNNIES! As we hippity hop our way closer to Easter, my son is getting increasingly excited to visit with the ‘real’ Easter Bunny, who frequents our favourite local chocolate shop in April •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• So today for #april_play literacy week plus #readalongplayalong we read We’re Going on an Egg Hunt and Duck & Goose Here Comes the Easter Bunny (forgot to take a photo, but I bet you’ve seen them around, they’re great and popular Easter stories - check out @capturingparent2016 for more great recommendations). •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Then we made some spin art bunnies, because I can hardly let a week go by without using our salad spinner to paint something. And @a.pop.of.culture and #craftthezoo are bunny themed this week, so we’re on point! •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• I cut bunny shapes out of cardstock, taped one at a time in our trusty IKEA salad spinner (which I no longer wash out, as you can see ...) and squeezed paint over them. My son squeezed the paint on all the bunnies except the one that I took a video of. Swipe for the video, requested from a few people last time we did spin art. You get the idea, but I totally overdid the spin whilst jamming to 90’s J. Lo so added more paint and spun a bit more. Excuse my grunt of dissatisfaction after the first go My son was really engaged with this today, he spun a few of them himself and is quite proud of the turquoise one with orange and white. He did it totally solo, even opened all the tricky paint lids himself. Our Little Tinker LOVES dogs just like me so today is all about one of our favourite books Dear Zoo, if you don't know this classic story it's about a little boy who writes to the zoo asking for a pet, they send him all sorts of animals but none of them are quite right for him until the end. . So hidden inside all of the boxes (representing the parcels from the story) are @lankakade animals to represent the animals in the book. . Wool wrapped Owls I had an idea for that Mr 6 and Mr 8 could create three little owls and then I could read Owl Babies to the younger two with the boys yarn wrapped owls. Alas, the library didn’t have a copy available! We did find Happy by Emma Dodd, a lovely book about a Mama owl and how her little owl makes her happy. So I’m calling it a win! I often plan a quiet craft activity on a Friday afternoon for the older two to unwind after a busy week of school. They really enjoyed making these. We have had some strange weather this week from gorgeous sunshine to rain and even a spot of snow so we decided to finish the week with some weather themed fun. I set up this invitation to play with water beads and water coloured with blue food colouring. We talked about where puddles come from and filled up our puddles in the play tray using mini pipettes. I had put some washing up liquid in the puddles and we had lots of fun using wind from our straws to make bubbly puddles. We paired this activity with our book ‘Sunshine and Snowballs’ for some #bookishplay which is perfect for #bringbooksalive weather theme with @readwithriver, @hotcoffee_creativekids, @eatplay.andlove, and @microwaved_coffee. . Under the Sea sensory play in our tray today. We had so much fun finding all the sunken treasure using our little sieves. I filled our tray with water and added some blue water beads, I then popped in some shells, glass pebbles and added some sparkly gems and fake pearls for Tiny to scoop and find. // LITTLE BLUE AND LITTLE YELLOW // It's the final day of our Book Week #BookishPlay Takeover, and today was a SUPER easy (and actually relatively mess-free!) colour mixing activity to go with the book 'Little Blue and Little Yellow'. It's all about two friends - Little Blue and Little Yellow - that give each other a hug, but something happens! They both turn green! So we grabbed some paper plates, squirted a little blue on one and a little yellow on another, give them both a big cuddle by rubbing them together and then pulled them apart to see what happened! Paige loved reading the story then retelling it using the paints, and Samuel had an absolute BALL rubbing the plates together to get a new colour! This would be a great activity to go with 'Mix It Up' as well, using any mix of primary colours. .
