Child led learning - I have been busy today preparing for Eid tomorrow. So it is typical that my 3 year old has been following me around all day asking me to help him learn how to read. In the last few weeks he has shown a sudden interest in learning to read. This is most likely due to having a big brother who is an avid reader and is always absorbed in a book. So I have hit the pause button on the Eid prep and spending some time with him. He is only 3 so I was quite reluctant to focus on teaching him to read but I will follow his lead and at a slow pace. Child-directed play or child-led learning may sound like progressive ideas, but there is research to support why all children benefit from opportunities to guide and initiate the flow of activities (play and learning). Primarily, this capitalizes on children’s motivation and interest, which builds intrinsic motivation and confidence. Studies have found child-directed activities enhance learning in a range of populations and environments (Griffin, 2000).⠀ ⠀ Because child-led activities are relevant and authentic for children, they remain more engaged in the activity. When children are genuinely motivated and interested in an activity, behavior also improves without the need for rewards.⠀ ⠀ Children must be able to practice new skills across a range of settings and conditions so multiple and varied learning opportunities are necessary. Sometimes activities are planned, other times they are routine, and sometimes they are free for exploration.

Our little ones are really good at knowing what their bodies need and showing us if we let them. When children seek out movement from jumping, crashing, and running they’re telling us that their bodies need to move before it can sit and listen. When we stop trying to direct our child’s play, we are better able to quickly see what their sensory needs are. Furthermore, when we as adults follow their lead during play and join in with what they are doing it sends a message to our children that we understand them and what their bodies need. When children feel accepted and understood by adults it leads to better engagement and participation overall. Oftentimes, I see parents, caregivers, and professionals stopping a child from engaging in a behavior that their sensory system needs to regulate in order to get them to follow the adult’s directions during a task. The problem with this is that while you may be able to get the child to do the activity with assistance, the child is not engaged in the task; so when this happens is the child really learning? My biggest recommendation for parents is to let your child engage in the jumping, spinning, crashing etc. as long as your child is safe doing it (safety first!) and better yet do it with them.
