Today we finished our retreat at @yogainsalento. It was a fun week! And it was the first yoga retreat I’ve ever led where the men outnumbered the women! Is this a new trend? Do you have more men or women in your yoga community? - Here I’m helping the amazing Thein in #karandavasana, a challenging arm-balance from Ashtanga’s Intermediate Series. - The key to this pose is to curl the tail bone under as you come down. You need to hold the legs close to chest. And when you lift up, it’s the same: try keep the legs tight against the body until the hips are over the shoulders. - This assist encourages the work of rounding the back. Standing on the students’s hands/forearms helps them press through the arms and extend through the shoulder. Lifting a student from the back of the legs (instead of hauling them up by the hips) directs them to stay contained as they press up. - Want to know more? It’s time for another #DRonthemat tutorial. This week is JUMPBACK PART 2. . To do the tutorial, you’re going to need to be able to lift in Uthpluthi/Tolasana. While this seems fairly simple, it can be pretty challenging for a lot of practitioners. . So I’m making a post that’s a tutorial for the tutorial. . Uthpluthi/Tolasana requires both the hips and the feet to lift off the floor: •cross your shins and pull your legs tight to your torso. Roll slight back on the hips to keep the feet up. •place your hands shoulder width in front of your hips and behind your feet. Spin your arms in. Press into the hands and straighten your arms. •this is the important part: LIFT FORWARD FROM THE TAILBONE, not the head and shoulders. Did it work? Check out the tutorial! It's day 1️⃣3️⃣ of #dontsmashyourface-- the last day of our challenge! . We've had so much fun hosting this challenge. @vesic_jelena and I have really enjoyed seeing your posts. Your triumphs, your struggles, your face smashes! . And today we've got one last challenge for you: #Handstand! . In this video I'm demonstrating the #handstandpress, the straight leg lift into the pose. . ➡️To set up, hands shoulder width and spin the forearms in ➡️Press through your arms to round the upper back, reaching from the shoulders. ➡️Shift your weight forward onto your straight arms. ➡️Pull the lower belly in and try to stack your hips over the shoulders. ➡️Lift the legs! . The struggle is real. . But of course I love it . Every once in a while someone tells me that Ashtanga is only for teenage boys, or that it’s not sustainable, deeply imbalanced, too yang, etc. . I’ve now been practicing for 20 years, and I feel better in my body and mind than I did when I started. I’m still finding new depth in my practice all the time. .
